Part of the Global Business Unit Land and Air Systems (LAS) within Thales Group, Thales AMS (Airspace Mobility Solutions) is providing leading edge airspace control and security solutions for the commercial and defense sectors, as well as digital solutions for Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) and Digital Aviation.
AMS represents revenues of over 500 million Euros worldwide and is the global market leader in the space of Air Traffic Management and one of the most credible players in the new UTM space.
The AMS Business Line is undergoing a set of major challenges, airspace is becoming increasingly saturated, new regulations are being put in place, UTM is emerging as a new domain to cover, cyber threat, and is, in addition, facing technological breakthroughs coming from new technologies (agile software development, component based architecture, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, Cloud, ...).
The Airspace Mobility Solutions (AMS) BL strategy is based on two major transformations:
- The establishment of a new product policy based on a consistent products portfolio addressing the market globally
- The identification of new Air traffic Control (ATC) capabilities enabling to grow significantly our order intake by completing our traditional ATC offer with new Digital technology and applications
AMS delivers very complex safety and security critical systems mainly Software based. Projects are following an incremental and parallel development process. Projects involves teams in France (Rungis/Toulouse), Portugal, UK, Romania and Australia.
AMS is enforcing the discipline management to master ongoing developments and prepare the future in improving its competitiveness, customer and team satisfaction.
In this context, product/project solutions maturity and architecture are key enablers to ensure a high operational, functional and technical maturity of the deployed systems. Digital aspects of solutions and development framework are also key enablers of system discipline transformation.
The System Head of discipline is responsible of people and discipline management (System requirement, Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification).
He/She manages a team to support project /product deliveries and bids for the scope of its discipline.
As a key actor of competitiveness improvement, the System Head of discipline is in charge to deploy the engineering transformation and develop continuous improvement as well as a culture of innovation.
Agile@Scale is a key driver of AMS transformation therefore System Head of discipline will lead and support this implementation in his/her scope.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities (Key Accountabilities)
The System Head of discipline:
- Contribute to build a clear vision and direction with worldwide Head of Discipline in engineering-wide initiatives and communicate to the team
- Develop innovation and entrepreneurship culture
- Instill into the team and develop external collaboration to foster innovation and seek adequate expertise.
- Contribute to the discipline enhancement plan and support improvements raised by the teams to process and tools in order to boost quality, efficiency and delivery on-time
- Propose engineering discipline cost model definition and upgrades based on capitalization and Metrics. Monitor regularly competitiveness (assess the cost model through benchmark across Thales organization and group similar discipline, challenge bid quotation, …)
- Ensure that any major risk is identified and managed in the scope of the discipline for any project, product or bid
- Communicate, standardize and reinforce the system quality standards and monitor their deployment
- Provide leadership to coach, motivate, and lead team members to their optimum performance levels
- Interact regularly with team members to define and monitor their carrier plan
- Ensure & secure the workload to fulfil current and future project needs
- Map current and forecasted soft & hard skills to identify discipline trends and propose upskilling plan (training, coaching, …)
- Manage recruitment and Make Team Buy to serve the transformation & innovation plan (focus on key skills) and forecasted workload
- Foster collaboration with other disciplines to define multi-discipline solutions with added value
- Interface to the team for non-engineering departments to flow down information from HSE, HR, Facilities, …
Qualification
Experience required
- Proven experience (10+ years) in development of products and projects in a variety of methodologies, with a particular focus on iterative/agile development
- Significant experience (5+ years) in managing people
- Full engineering lifecycle management, including system engineering, specification engineering, qualification and deployment.
- Working in a complex, multidisciplinary, multi-site and multi-country organisation.
- Experience with the Safety and security environment and standards
