As a Security Specialist at BYU-Hawaii, you will utilize foundational IT and cybersecurity knowledge to assist in monitoring, investigating, and responding to security incidents. You will support vulnerability remediation, analyze system logs, develop security dashboards, and promote cybersecurity awareness on campus. This role provides hands-on, real-world cybersecurity experience while working closely with the Church Education System Information Security Operations Center (CES SOC) and BYU-Hawaii IT staff.
Primary Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a fellow student specialist to coordinate and support cybersecurity efforts.
- Participate in CES SOC coordination meetings and ongoing training sessions.
- Track and manage tasks through a ticketing system ensuring timely resolution.
- Investigate and respond to phishing emails and other potential threats.
- Assist with vulnerability management and remediation activities.
- Design, maintain, and analyze security dashboards and alert systems.
- Analyze system logs to detect indicators of compromise or anomalies.
- Monitor IT security risks and track action items assigned during IT Security Council meetings.
- Support planning and execution of the CES SOC Cybersecurity Bootcamp held once per semester.
- Promote cybersecurity awareness by hosting information booths, delivering training sessions, and mentoring student cybersecurity club members.
- Perform other duties related to information security as assigned.
Education
Lower Division Courses Completed. Currently enrolled or completed courses in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related fields. High school diploma or GED with equivalent experience is acceptable.
Work Experience
3 Months of Directly Relevant Experience. Experience is not required but familiarity with basic IT systems, operating systems (Windows, Apple, Microsoft products), and cybersecurity principles is preferred.

Base Rate Per Hour:
14.50*Must exemplify the university Honor Code, including the Dress and Grooming Principles and Expectations
