Job Description:

A manager focused on physical protection of our people, including senior leaders, through core accountabilities including executive protection, event security management, and travel risk management. The manager will work with team members to develop a best-in-class Enhanced Personnel Protection program, including robust policies and procedures, to support enterprise-level physical security requirements. Under the guidance of the Director, Enterprise Physical Risk, this position manages the overall program effectiveness to ensure comprehensive, high-quality delivery of services. They will also consult on incident response and operational execution as it relates to protection of company assets and people.

This position will interact with senior management at the Corporate and Business Group level, as well as peers in Security, Risk and Crisis Management, Corporate Real Estate, Human Resources, and other domains. This also includes external contacts such as government, security, and law enforcement.

What you will do:

  • Manage an enterprise-level Enhanced Personnel Protection program, including direct reports in both Canada and the Philippines. This includes:
    • Leading onsite security support, in-depth risk assessments, and operational plans for events, including the Annual General Meeting, Investor Day, International Leaders Conferences, Board of Director meetings, etc.
    • The organization’s travel risk program, including vendor management, consulting on travel-related risks, and designing and implementing processes and controls.
  • Enterprise-level development and implementation of strategy and programs for the physical protection of people in the workplace and facilities owned or occupied by the company and its assets.
  • Ensure team members, including the Incident Reporting Centre, have up to date information and risk assessments to support the team’s mandate for the protection of assets and people.
  • Manage team members in identifying, developing, implementing and maintaining processes and practices throughout the enterprise to preserve life and safety, manage risks, respond to incidents/emergencies, and limit exposure and liability for physical security and related risks.
  • Contribute to the mentoring and development of team members and encourage knowledge and idea sharing through collaboration.
  • Maintain in-depth awareness of industry and technology trends, through industry organizations and networking opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key business leaders to communicate value and ensure that the quality of services provided meets our objectives.
  • Provide input into annual budgeting, monthly forecasting and variance reporting cycles.
  • Ensure financial management, tracking and measurements of strategic initiatives.

What you need to succeed:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience within a corporate or government security department for a similar organization of comparable size and complexity.
  • Experience leading operational teams, including executive and personnel protection.
  • Superior knowledge of Physical Security and Life Safety legislation, principles, protocols, practices and industry standards.
  • Comprehensive understanding of physical security system strategies (e.g. access control, CCTV, security lighting, perimeter/interior intrusion detection, security lighting, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organization, strategic thinking, leadership and planning skills.
  • Proven ability to lead tense situations, including crisis and emergency events.
  • Must be able to work with senior business leaders focusing on a business perspective and interpret security context in a way understandable to business and non-technical people. 
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of ethics, diversity, equity and harassment in the workplace. 
  • Strong consulting and collaboration skills. 
  • Self-starter, strategic thinker, negotiator and consensus builder. 

Assets:

  • Actively engaged in professional associations such as ASIS and possession of relevant certifications such as CPP, PSP, CISSP, and CISM.
  • Superior ability to manage time and meet changing priorities in a multi-task environment.
  • Superior problem solving, decision-making, and mediation skills.
  • Collaborative, team-first approach.

Other Requirements:

  • Travel between company locations and in support of event security is about 20%.
  • Flexibility in work schedule, ability to respond to after-hour or extended day calls.

As a condition of the role, the successful candidate must obtain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance through Sun Life in advance of the start date

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
