Summary of Job Duties:
The Director of Research Integrity and Compliance leads the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC). Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Administration, the Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the University's research compliance programs. These include human subjects protection (IRB), animal care and use (IACUC), biosafety (IBC), radiation safety, conflicts of interest and commitment (COI/C), and research misconduct (as assigned). The Director ensures institutional compliance with applicable federal, state, and sponsor regulations and promotes a culture of ethical and responsible research conduct across the University. Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide strategic direction and oversight for all research compliance programs.
Lead the development, implementation, and revision of institutional policies and procedures related to research integrity and compliance.
Supervise and evaluate the work of the core ORIC staff, and their work with compliance committees including the IRB, IACUC, and IBC; and ensure compliance with OHRP, USDA, NIH, CDC, NRC, and other agency requirements.
Maintain all required institutional registrations, assurances, and licenses related to research compliance.
Design and deliver training programs on the responsible conduct of research (RCR) and other compliance topics for faculty, staff, and students.
Respond to and manage compliance concerns and incidents, including investigations, reporting, corrective actions, and follow-up.
Act as the primary liaison with federal and state regulatory bodies and sponsors on matters related to research compliance.
Monitor changes in regulatory requirements and best practices; proactively adapt University policies and programs as needed.
Represent the University on system-wide and national research compliance and ethics committees as time permits.
Manage operational budgets, personnel, and information systems supporting compliance functions.
When tasked by the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation, fills the role of Research Integrity Officer (RIO) and coordinates inquiries and investigations into allegations of research misconduct in accordance with 42 CFR Part 93 and University policy.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a scientific, legal, or health-related discipline
At least six to 10 years of progressively responsible research compliance experience in a university, academic medical center, or comparable research organization
At least three (3) years of supervisory experience managing professional staff
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (e.g., MS, JD, MPH, MBA with regulatory focus, PhD)
Relevant professional certification (e.g., CIP, CPIA, CRA, RAPS)
Experience managing multiple compliance domains
Demonstrated success with electronic research administration and compliance system
Experience leading institutional compliance programs during audits or external reviews
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expert knowledge of federal research regulations, including 45 CFR 46 (human subjects), 21 CFR 312–812 (FDA), 42 CFR 93 (research misconduct), USDA regulations (animal research), NIH guidelines (biosafety)
Exposure to export control (EAR/ITAR) and cybersecurity standards in a research setting
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policy and procedure in a complex regulatory environment
Strong analytical, investigatory, and judgment skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across disciplines and with external stakeholders
Proven leadership and team management skills
High ethical standards and ability to manage sensitive and confidential information
