We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Systems Engineer (Agile Software Systems & Scrum Master). In this critical role, you will lead the design, implementation, and sustainment of sophisticated, mission-driven software systems that support national defense objectives. Beyond your technical contributions, you will serve as a catalyst for agile transformation, facilitating Scrum events, coaching cross-functional teams, and championing best practices that promote velocity, transparency, and delivery excellence. This is a unique opportunity to influence both system architecture and team performance in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement are not just encouraged, but expected.  This role will play a key part in designing, implementing, and maintaining complex software systems while fostering an agile team culture that drives efficiency, transparency, and continuous improvement. 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain robust software systems that meet client requirements and exceed quality standards.
  • Lead or participate in architectural discussions and decision-making processes to ensure scalability, security, and maintainability of software systems.
  • Facilitate agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives as a Scrum Master.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, product owners, QA, and operations, to deliver high-quality solutions within defined timelines.
  • Identify and remove impediments that hinder the team’s progress, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Coach and mentor team members on agile principles, practices, and tools, ensuring the adoption of best practices across the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure effective communication across all levels of the organization and act as a servant leader for the scrum team.
  • Monitor project progress and performance, proactively identifying risks and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Document system designs, architecture decisions, and technical guidelines to maintain clarity and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Promote a learning culture by organizing knowledge-sharing sessions, retrospectives, and process improvement initiatives.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in systems engineering, with a focus on software systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Scrum Master, facilitating agile team delivery (agile frameworks such as Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe).
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#, JavaScript).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong understanding of DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Scrum Master certification (CSM, PSM) or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Experience with enterprise software development, microservices architecture, and RESTful APIs.
  • Background in cybersecurity or secure software development practices.
  • Familiarity with agile project management tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps, Trello).
  • Experience in mentoring or managing other engineers and agile practitioners.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards relevant to software systems (e.g., ISO, HIPAA, GDPR, STIG).

Additional Notes: The selected applicant may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 hours/week

Basic Compensation: $113,000-$142,000. The salary range posted is based on the national average. The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s location, knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or experience, contract affordability, and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation: KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
