Manager Data Center and Server Management - (250001XM)

 Job Overview
The Manager Data Center & Server Management is responsible for the overall enterprise-wide effectiveness, reliability, and efficiency of Fort Bend Independent School District's data center(s), data center infrastructures, data center applications, and data center servers. This role involves strategic planning, team management, team building, and technical expertise to ensure the high-quality operation and support of FBISD's data center systems. The Manager takes ownership of all aspects of FBISD's data center(s), including architecture, configuration, deployment, maintenance, redundancy, and disaster recovery. They ensure high-quality end-user support for specific server operational systems, including the infrastructure platform for FBISD's messaging environment, web services, directory services (namely Active Directory), virtualization, storage network array (SAN), and cloud services. This role also involves leading the migration to new technologies and forecasting financial, physical, and human resource needs to meet established objectives. These systems will be used district-wide by faculty, students, guests, and staff in accordance with FBISD's goals. The Manager will work closely with Information Technology Services Directors and Managers to properly maintain and support these systems.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Technology Leadership

  • Lead strategic planning for data center infrastructure, server platforms, and collaborative tools aligned with FBISD’s mission and goals.
  • Evaluate current and emerging technologies to maintain alignment with district needs.
  • Define requirements, assess risks, and develop cost-benefit analyses for new technology initiatives.
  • Serve as a key member of the Technology Division management team to define governance and influence infrastructure strategy.
  • Provide visionary insight and recommendations for long-range technology integration and innovation.
Data Center and Server Systems Oversight
  • Oversee lifecycle management of all servers, including service restoration, business continuity, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Coordinate Data Center operations, incident response, and project portfolio execution.
  • Develop tools, standards, and policies for effective system monitoring and operation.
  • Evaluate and enhance infrastructure services to ensure optimal performance and compliance.
  • Design and manage technical project plans, ensuring timely completion and quality outcomes.
Operational Excellence and Service Delivery
  • Support and manage Office 365/M365 services, including administration, updates, and vendor collaboration.
  • Establish procedures, policies, and technical documentation for infrastructure services.
  • Independently resolve complex technical issues and ensure service delivery meets legal and operational standards.
  • Collaborate with users to ensure systems meet functional needs and enhance end-user experiences.
Financial and Vendor Management
  • Develop and manage annual budgets for the Data Center and Server Management Department.
  • Review and negotiate hardware/software contracts and pursue strategic vendor agreements.
  • Manage vendor relationships to ensure cost-effective, high-quality service delivery.
  • Monitor expenditures and create business justifications for technology investments.
    Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Oversee recruitment, retention, and performance evaluations in alignment with FBISD policies.
    • Direct and mentor a high-performing team of system specialists and engineers.
    • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and professional development to promote staff growth.
     

    Qualifications

     Qualification Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or related field from an accredited college or university
    • Master's degree preferred
    • Equivalent combination of education and a minimum of 7 years of experience in data center may be considered in lieu of degree requirement
    • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience managing a large, enterprise information technology operations, department, and staff
    • Minimum of 7 years of practical experience in implementing and/or operating, troubleshooting, resolving high level, complex issues related to data center, servers, and/or server applications
    • Experience installing boards and memory into systems
    • Experience in developing and implementing processes and procedures
    • Experience with Storage Array Network (SAN) via Fiber Channel and iSCSI, NFS (Network File System), CIFS (Common Internet File System), and SMB (Server Message Block) technology, theory, and equipment is preferred
    • Experience managing a large, complex academic networking infrastructure is preferred
    • Project management experience preferred
    • MCSE, VCP, CCNA, CCNP, and/or CISSP Certification preferred
    • Knowledge of current data center and server technology, theory, and equipment
    • Knowledge of email services (Microsoft Exchange) and directory services (Microsoft Active Directory)
    • Working knowledge of current VMWare or alike virtualization technology, theory, and equipment
    • Working knowledge of current networking technology, theory, and equipment
    • Working knowledge of server and data center information security
    • Working knowledge of virtualization and cloud computing
    • Working knowledge of Office 365 and Microsoft 365 services
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Visio
    • Requires an ability to work well under pressure, frequently without supervision
    • Staff development, team building, and coaching experience
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Strong communication and presentation skills with excellent spoken and written English are required. Must be able to explain difficult abstract concepts. Ability to communicate clearly with all levels of internal and external end users
    • Initiative and ability to work independently and willingness to proactively learn new skills
    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

    • As systems must remain operational, all personnel in this position may be called upon to provide service and/or support at various times
