Firewall Operations Engineer – IT Outsourcing/ Cloud - Remote within Canada

This is a remote position - candidate can be located anywhere in Canada.

About this role

As a Firewall Operations Engineer, the selected candidate will be performing Level 3 firewall operations and collaborating with LAN and WAN teams to diagnose and resolve environmental issues, often requiring vendor interaction for major incidents or common problems. Responsibilities include creating and managing change records, implementing changes, and participating in project efforts alongside senior Firewall Engineers. The role involves monitoring network traffic, recommending resource or hardware adjustments, and supporting VPN solutions. Additionally, the job requires assisting in implementing the corporation’s network architecture, which includes Checkpoint, Cisco, Arista, and Hewlett Packard Firewalls. The individual will support security events and audits, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and participate in throughput analysis, problem-solving, and infrastructure planning. They will also contribute to IT projects aimed at improving the data and telecommunications infrastructure, assist in designing and implementing large networks, and aid in planning communications requirements. The role demands a strong understanding of Firewall and Security technology and involves preparing tradeoff studies and evaluations for vendor equipment.

What you’ll do

  • Provide IT Infrastructure and Operating Support Services.
  • May be involved in Installation/Implementation of IT Infrastructure Components
  • Anticipate and identify problems, and submit corrective projects to the Program Office.
  • Receive and address problems from the IT Triage Help Desk.
  • Analyze, log, and categorize problems.
  • Identify root causes of issues.
  • Determine alternatives and perform fixes.
  • Follow up to ensure corrective actions are effective.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation.
  • Monitor and actively manage capacity, performance, and security according to IT agreements, policies, and standards.
  • Manage business continuity and recovery processes.
  • Assist in configuring IT infrastructure solutions and components.
  • Monitor technology component performance, including applications and databases.
  • Ensure any inconsistencies in documentation are addressed and resolved promptly.
  • Make recommendations for process improvements to enhance the efficiency of network operations.

Major Deliverables

  • Assist with documenting the production network.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date hardware and software inventory.
  • Communicate problems and follow through on fault isolation progress, appropriate escalations, and documentation of root cause analysis. Communication paths include users, peers, management, network operations center personnel, customers, and associated vendor trouble reporting systems.
  • Maintain and support a fully functional network that meets or exceeds business and customer requirements.
  • Perform operations support of firewall and security infrastructure, including hardware, software, authentication, access methods, and protocols.
  • Assist with implementing firewall and security communications and connections, ensuring designs for control, flexibility, scalability, and adaptability.
  • Identify and resolve hardware and software technical problems and malfunctions related to firewall and security systems.
  • Collaborate with the LAN/WAN/WLAN team and high-priority incident managers to triage and resolve major incidents.
  • Work with Problem Management to provide detailed root cause analysis (RCA) for internal and client review, detailing issues and improvements.
  • Use necessary tools and processes to identify and correct problems.
  • Ensure a stable performance environment for enterprise applications.
  • Participate in various IT projects aimed at continually improving and upgrading the telecommunications infrastructure.

Who you are

  • Advanced experience in enterprise and data center security policy design and deployment using Cisco ASA firewalls, Cisco ASA appliances, Checkpoint, and HA (high availability active/standby) environments.
  • Proficient in operational configuration and support of site-to-site VPN solutions using Cisco ASA or Checkpoint firewalls.
  • Working knowledge of recent versions of Cisco ASA or Checkpoint software.
  • Working knowledge of networking tools and the ability to configure them to support firewalls and security devices.
  • Working knowledge of network technology, operating systems, and applications.
  • Strong foundation in technical skills, including proficiency in network security, specifically with Cisco ASA and Fortinet.
  • Knowledge of Azure, troubleshooting, and configuring routers and switches.
  • Familiarity with Linux and TCP/IP protocols.
  • Experience with security policies and encryption.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and customer service skills.
  • Well-versed in one or more of the following: IP, OSPF, RIPV2, IP Multicast, DSL, HSRP, ISDN, AAA, Frame Relay, PPP, ATM, SONET, T3/T1, E1/E3, Gigabit/Fast Ethernet, Spanning Tree, VLANs, VOIP, 802.3, 802.3ae, 802.3ag, 802.11, 802.3ad, VRRP, 802.1Q, 802.1P, DiffServ, and diagnostic tools (e.g., sniffers).

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience with multiple vendor L2/L3 switching equipment.
  • 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience with Cisco ASA, Cisco Firepower, Checkpoint, and Arista firewalls.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with a large TCP/IP network.

Certifications

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Security Certification.
  • CheckPoint Certified Security Administrator (CCSA).
  • Additional Cisco or network certifications are a plus.
