We’re looking for an experienced Legal Director of Employment and Product Compliance to join our legal team. As a member of the legal team, you will work closely with colleagues across multiple internal functional groups on a wide range of matters, including employment, litigation, privacy, cybersecurity, AI and general compliance matters. This role reports directly to the General Counsel.
About the role
- Provide strategic legal counsel and guidance to the organization on a wide range of matters, balancing business objectives with relevant legal compliance requirements and risks.
- Counsel relevant teams and executives on a broad range of domestic and foreign employment law issues, including issues relating to recruitment and hiring, employee relations, performance management, internal investigations, leaves of absence, compensation and benefits, restrictive covenants, wage-and-hour compliance, employee privacy, and immigration.
- Assist with the creation and implementation of compliance policies and programs, including effective policies and procedures around data retention and legal hold policies.
- Identify evolving and unique employee relations challenges and proactively provide risk mitigation solutions.
- Draft, review, and revise legal templates, such as employment handbooks, offer letters, employment and consulting agreements, and other compensation and benefits-related plans and documentation across all levels within an international organization.
- Assist in the management of employment litigation, including resolving demand letters and pre-litigation disputes, supervising discovery, and managing both outside counsel and internal teams.
- Advise company leadership about legal issues involving Harness’ product offerings, help design and implement compliance programs, and provide practical legal risk mitigation strategies across multiple jurisdictions.
- Enhance existing cybersecurity and privacy compliance programs through collaboration with internal stakeholders and provide guidance on contractual risks.
- Enhance the company’s AI, privacy and cybersecurity compliance programs and provide strategic guidance to the engineering, product and security teams to ensure a safe and compliant use of AI in the company’s product portfolio.
- Monitor new and emerging developments in applicable worldwide regulations and laws, and identify potential impacts on current and future Harness product offerings.
- Help build and maintain internal processes, resources, and tools to help scale the legal function.
- Create and deliver training to educate employees on employment and product compliance related matters and enhance Harness’s culture of compliance.
- Assist with other special projects as needed.
About you
- JD degree (or equivalent) and admitted to practice law.
- 7+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally gained at an international law firm and in-house.
- Demonstrable history of providing practical guidance to solve complex, time-sensitive problems in close partnership with a variety of cross-functional teams.
- Excellent technical legal skills coupled with a strong understanding of business needs.
- Able to triage a heavy workflow, setting appropriate expectations with internal clients and delivering results efficiently and effectively.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills, and ability to manage several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure.
- Terrific sense of humor, disdain for drama, interest in learning new things, and desire to get things done
Work Location
- There is a strong preference to hire someone in the Bay Area but we will consider candidates who are located within the US.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $210,000 - $235,000 annually. Salary is determined by a combination of factors including location, level, relevant experience, and skills. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations.
