Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU), invites applications for the position of Professor of Practice in Cyber Security. Exceptional candidates with a strong background in the field of Cyber Security and a passion for teaching and engaging with the broader community will be considered.  This appointment for this position is anticipated to begin January 1, 2025 and the initial length of the appointment will be THREE (3) YEARS.  This is a part-time, non-tenure-track position with competitive compensation and benefits.

The department currently has created an undergraduate Certificate in Cybersecurity which is aimed at graduates with an AAS degree (two-year degree) who are working in a security or IT-related field. The certificate will provide the material needed to upskill students so that they can gain cybersecurity knowledge. The certificate will be offered online as a series of half-semester 2 credit courses. The certificate will be 21 credits. The courses in the certificate will map to federal training standards as outlined in the NIST/NICE framework.

The candidate is expected to teach students in the undergrad cybersecurity professional certificate program and contribute to the teaching mission. It is our expectation that you will stay up to date on the latest teaching methods and tools. You will adapt your courses to these methods and tools and work with others that are teaching cybersecurity courses. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence, and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.  In our department, faculty load for professional certificate courses is up to 12 per academic year.  Each Professor of Practice will teach no more than four (4), two-credit courses per academic year.  Because of varied appointments from year to year, pay will be $10K per course.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of Cyber Security, with a strong understanding of current and emerging trends.

  • Ability to teach a wide range of Cyber Security topics, including but not limited to, network security, cryptography, and cybercrime.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of teaching and outreach in Cyber Security

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of audiences

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, industry partners, and the broader community
