Find your superpower with the Gridtern Program     

As a Summer Intern (Gridtern Program), you will be fully immersed in the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on May 27, 2025, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, opportunities to get involved in your community and most importantly, have fun!   

 

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2025: 

Customer Enablement Products (Worcester, MA)

Our Customer Enablement Products (Sustainability & Innovation) team is responsible for the day-to-day operations of our Sustainability Hub. The primary goal of the Sustainability Hub is to elevate the conversation and community awareness about the importance of reducing emissions, promoting renewable energy, and identifying energy efficient solutions for residents and commercial businesses alike. As a Gridtern, you will participate in several training initiatives circling around sustainability and company initiatives in order to relay information to both our customers and Hub visitors throughout. You will help to educate customers and visitors in using technologies such as electronic thermostats or energy star appliances and also conducting Sustainability Hub tours while ensuring our social, web and company intranet is current with creative and engaging content circling around sustainability.

 

Customer Experience Products (Northborough, MA)

Our Customer Experience Products team ensures that the billing and payment products that each of our customers uses are both user-friendly and meets their needs. This team works closely with the marketing intelligence team to understand customer pain points and find better ways to deliver an interactive experience. When analyzing market trends, our Customer Experience Products team is looking for new and innovative programs to provide to our customers daily.  As a Gridtern you will be supporting the examination of monthly program reports to identify enrollment and de-enrollment trends and contributing to the development of marketing strategies to enhance program participation. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to assist in the creation of customer council polls to gather valuable feedback on areas where improvements are deemed necessary. 

 

Data Systems & Analytics (Northborough, MA)

Our Data Systems & Analytics team is responsible for serving as the primary point of contact for National Grid’s electric business. This team uses the EDM tool called Snowflake to provide standardized asset data reporting. In addition, they work on developing and supporting the Electrical Business ESRI ArcGIS Online platform, known as IMAP. Finally, this team works to build and monitor data pipelines from our source systems to deliver data that can be viewed on company desktops and mobile devices. As a Gridtern, you will contribute to an end-to-end Agile-based product release along with helping this team identify/construct a new business product. You will also lead the development and collection of requirements and support the development of the data ETL processes to support the new product, using tools such as GIS, Python, SQL, etc. 

NE Elec Project Mgmt & Construction (Worcester, MA)

Our New England Electric Project Management & Construction team is responsible for business transformation projects for both digital and non-digital projects in our New England Electric department. This team continues to push the envelope forward with enhancing process, automating manual tasks and using innovative technology to support the business towards success. As a Gridtern, you will support this team with both their digital and project portfolio work along with process mapping. In addition, you will be maintaining our roadmaps and highlighting areas of opportunity. 

 

Maps & Records (Northborough, MA) 

Our Maps & Records team is responsible for supporting data accuracy between different mapping systems at National Grid. Using various reporting streams, this team analyzes and resolves data errors in GIS and AutoCAD to support the control room's Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS). As they work with several stakeholders including Control Center Operations, Field Operations, Design and Work Closeout they are able to resolve discrepancies more effectively and efficiently. As a Gridtern, you will run, and review systems reports and provide discrepancies for resolution to the Maps & Records team. In addition, you will also be involved in supporting their process improvement efforts and various projects including ADMS Planned Layer and Cycle Time reduction. 

 

NE Project Control & Reporting (Northborough, MA) 

Our New England Project Control and Reporting team is accountable for the development, management, and analysis of project schedules here at National Grid. This team works to analyze the costs of our company’s large portfolio of Capital Transmissions, Substation and Distribution line projects while ensuring the maintenance of these functions are running efficiently. As a Gridtern, you will assist this team with creating and building out dashboards using PowerBI along with providing maintenance of data where necessary. You will work with several stakeholders to obtain project schedules and be responsible for receiving financial updates throughout. 

New England Absence Management (Northborough, MA) 

Our New England Absence Management team manages all of the short term and long-term absences, and disability matters along with oversight of worker compensation cases. The team administers the company's drug and alcohol programs and is the point of contact for all ADA compliance cases. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to work on various projects supporting different areas within this department. Some projects in the past have included contractor drug & alcohol program support, presentation development, reporting & PowerBI development. 

 

Resource Coordination – RAM (Northborough, MA) 

Our Resource Coordination – RAM team manages the scheduling based on the available employees for our several stakeholders. This team's responsibilities are relied upon by multiple stakeholders in both our Electric and Gas divisions, both scheduled and unscheduled emergency work.  As a Gridtern, you will support this team by ensuring resources are properly assigned and allocated for scheduled and unscheduled assignments. Additionally, you will also help to create and streamline several processes for optimization. Lastly, you are provided with the opportunity to support the work circling this department’s job aids   

 

SOAR - Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (Northborough, MA) 

Our SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) team serves as the primary technical resource for developing automation and response capabilities to detect, resolve, and mitigate cyber security attacks within the Splunk platform. This team is skilled in advanced data analytics, scripting, and development, and collaborates closely with the security response and threat management teams to safeguard our national energy services from potential cyber disruptions. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with the team to identify areas for improvement, develop and implement automation for detection and response, integrate new data sources via REST APIs, and produce System Analytics to confirm the effectiveness of automation behaviors. Furthermore, you will contribute to releasing new use cases that aim to optimize the benefits and efficiencies of a SOAR platform. 

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, May 27, 2025, and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer 
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2025 Semester  
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree 
  • Majoring in Business Administration, Data Science, Computer Science, Occupational Health, Human Resources, Environmental Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Marketing, Project Management, Construction Management, Finance, Accounting, Sustainability, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age  
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT) 
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$20.00 - $26.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)
$28.00 - $32.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

 

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

 

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
