The Database Administrator, reporting directly to the Senior Database Administrator, will assume a pivotal role in designing, testing, planning, implementing, protecting, operating, managing, and maintaining the organization's databases.

The incumbent must ensure the data infrastructure's reliability, integrity, and security, demonstrating an elevated level of expertise and leadership within the database administration function.

The primary responsibilities of a Database Administrator include:

  1. Database Installation and Configuration: Setting up and configuring database systems based on the requirements of the organization. This involves selecting appropriate database software, installing it on servers, and configuring it to optimize performance and security.
  2. Database Design: Designing the structure and layout of databases to ensure they meet the organization's needs for data storage, retrieval, and management. This includes defining tables, indexes, relationships, and data integrity constraints.
  3. Data Modeling and Implementation: Developing data models to visualize database structure and relationships. Implementing these models in the database management system (DBMS) to ensure data is stored efficiently and accurately.
  4. Performance Monitoring and Tuning: Monitoring database performance and identifying opportunities for optimization. This includes tuning queries, indexes, and database parameters to improve response times and throughput.
  5. Backup and Recovery: Implementing and maintaining backup and recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and availability in case of system failures or disasters. Testing backup and recovery procedures regularly to verify reliability.
  6. Security Management: Implementing and maintaining database security policies and procedures to protect sensitive data against unauthorized access, data breaches, and cyberattacks. This includes user access control, encryption, and auditing.
  7. Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution: Diagnosing and resolving database-related issues, such as performance bottlenecks, data corruption, or connectivity problems. Implementing fixes and patches to address vulnerabilities or bugs in the DBMS.
  8. Capacity Planning and Scaling: Estimating current and future database capacity requirements based on data growth and usage trends. Scaling database systems horizontally or vertically to accommodate increasing workload demands.
  9. Documentation and Reporting: Documenting database configurations, processes, and procedures for reference and training purposes. Generating reports on database performance, usage statistics, and compliance with organizational policies.
  10. Collaboration and Support: Collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other Tech staff to ensure smooth integration and operation of database systems within the overall Tech infrastructure. Providing support and guidance on database-related issues.

Requirements

Here's a breakdown of the requirements for DBA position:

Education:

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or a related field.

Technical Skills:

  • Database Management Systems (DBMS): Proficiency in one or more DBMS platforms such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.
  • Database Design: Knowledge of database design principles, normalization techniques, data modeling, and schema design.
  • SQL and Query Optimization: Strong SQL skills for querying databases efficiently. Ability to optimize queries and understand query execution plans.
  • Backup and Recovery: Experience with database backup and recovery procedures, including setting up and testing backup strategies.
  • Performance Tuning: Ability to monitor and optimize database performance using tools and techniques such as index tuning, query optimization, and memory management.
  • Security: Understanding of database security principles and best practices, including access control, encryption, and vulnerability management.

Professional Experience:

  • Mid-level positions 2-5 years of relevant work experience in database administration or related roles.

Certifications (Optional but beneficial):

  • Certifications from database vendors such as Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, PostgreSQL Certified Professional, etc.
  • Security certifications like Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) .

Soft Skills:

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve database-related issues effectively.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with stakeholders, document processes, and explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Team Collaboration: Willingness to collaborate with developers, system administrators, and other Tech staff to support database-related projects and initiatives.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in database design, data integrity, and security measures to ensure accurate and reliable data management.

Adaptability and Continuous Learning:

  • Due to the evolving nature of database technologies and cybersecurity threats, the Candidate should be proactive in staying updated with industry trends, new database features, and security best practices.
