Cyber Associate

In this newly created role, we are seeking enthusiastic team players to work with our blue-chip clients.  We advise and handle disputes for major insurers, Lloyds syndicates, large corporates, utilities, and local authorities. This role will have a particular focus on cyber and data risks.

Our legal team is led from our Bristol offices, with colleagues in Cardiff, London and across the country.

The Team

Our cyber team works closely with insurers, brokers, incident managers and data forensics to respond to data breaches and cyber risk incidents, helping clients of all sizes, from third sector and SMEs through to global corporates. We are part of a market leading and innovative solution, providing an integrated response to guide clients through their crisis and advise on regulatory investigations and privacy litigation that follows.

We are a preferred legal services provider to the cyber insurance industry which ensures a regular and growing flow of data breach matters. The team typically acts as the first responder, providing legal advice alongside the forensic investigation.

As an emerging area of insurance risks, there are few experts, meaning this is an ideal area for those seeking career an exciting new challenge.  We are also committed to developing our internal talent.

Main duties and responsibilities

We are looking for new colleagues who have an interest in the cyber and data protection area. This work suits self-starters with the ability to provide immediate advice in time-critical matters. 

As part of the cyber team you will:

  • Have responsibility for leading on exciting and fast-paced breach notifications

  • Operate at the cutting edge of this emerging area of law

  • Operate with autonomy, but with the benefit of support and supervision from leading practitioners at all times

  • Have opportunities to interact directly with clients on high-profile matters, often in the public domain, and build your own client base

  • Work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, often making time pressured and critical decisions

  • Work in a highly collaborative environment, both within the team, across Sedgwick, and with clients

  • Assist the partners with complex caseloads

  • Prepare detailed and technical reports & correspondence

  • Ensure compliance with client service level agreements, relevant policies and procedures

  • Supporting business development initiatives

  • Delegate to and develop trainees and paralegals

  • Assist the wider Sedgwick group

  • Work in accordance with Sedgwick values

What are we looking for?
  • 1PQE+ experience as a solicitor, legal executive or equivalent

  • Experience of insurance and litigation is essential

  • Experience of cyber and data protection claims is desirable

  • Understanding of commercial insurance policies, the insurance market, reporting arrangements, reserving philosophies, and the relationship between brokers, underwriters/insurers and lawyers would be valuable

  • Previous secondment to or employment with an insurance organisation would be advantageous

  • Ability to work to deadlines / targets, to prioritise and manage a caseload and to work under pressure to deliver effective solutions

  • Ability to work well as part of a team and on your own initiative

  • A commercial, solution-driven and client-focused approach

  • Strong legal and analytical skills and an eye for detail

  • Excellent organisation and time-management skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a positive attitude

  • Excellent IT skills

  • Excellent teamwork skills

Cyber sits as part of our wider legal services offering, by which we mean providing expert legal advice to clients across the insurance and corporate markets. Our teams work collaboratively across these disciplines and, whilst everyone will have their area of particular expertise, we encourage cross-working so colleagues have genuine variety in their work and can use their rounded expertise to provide creative, bespoke solutions for our clients.  As such, if you are keen to undertake a mix of insurance litigation work, whilst also practising in cyber and data protection claims, this may be an excellent opportunity for you.
