Senior Security Engineer: Platform Security

The Helsinki Systems Security Laboratory in Huawei (HSSL) drives renewal and mastery in the field of platform / device related security technologies, primarily for the mobile device. Our topical expertise is in hardware-assisted isolation and system protection (hypervisor, TEE, kernel hardening), compiler and hardware-assisted memory protection as well as security functions like device key management, attestation and integrity.

Currently and in the next few years, Huawei is investing a lot of R&D effort in our new HarmonyOS operating system for consumer devices, with a new application ecosystem, a hybrid OS kernel, and revamped system services. Our team is deeply involved in building security / protection solutions for this OS, and we are looking for an engineer with interest to join the team and participate in the mission. We offer good growth opportunities, specifically you will be working as part of a very experienced and recognized research and development team in this specific topical area. The laboratory’s mission also involves deep interaction with academic research and international standardization, so interests in that direction (e.g. in combination with further academic studies) can also potentially be accommodated for.

We are looking for:

• A candidate with a completed / soon to be completed M.Sc (or PhD) in Computer Science, with at least some experience with embedded computing and/or computer architecture and/or operating systems.
  
• More than cursory knowledge in the field of embedded programming in C/C++/Rust using standard tools like Git version control, debuggers (e.g. GDB).
  

• Proficiency in English, with a mindset geared towards exploring new ideas and technologies.
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.

We consider the following as advantages:

• Understanding of OS kernel internals (e.g. Linux), writing OS drivers, software patching, or similar
• Insight into compilers and compiler internals / principles, JIT compilation, memory safety
  
• Security / cryptography coursework or similar understanding, knowledge about trust roots such as trusted execution environments, Confidential Compute, TPMs, …
  
• Understanding of OS kernel internals (e.g. Linux), writing OS drivers, or similar

• Industry experience, e.g. in the form of internships
