The Office of Information Security (OIS) coordinates security services and projects across campus to help safeguard the University's information assets against unauthorized use, disclosure, modification, damage, or loss.

OIS is looking for a Senior Information Security Engineer to improve the information security posture at the University of Pennsylvania by developing new tools, automating workflows, and integrating systems using python, shell scripts, git, terraform, ansible, and Amazon Web Services. The position is also required to use enterprise log management tools (Splunk or LogScale) and security tools (e.g. Suricata, Zeek/Corelight), and improve the ability of those tools to reliably detect threats. They also act as a resource for the OIS Security Operations Center (SOC) team in use of the tools and as backup during incident response.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, develop and maintain information security tools for use by the OIS Security Operations Center (SOC) and School and Center information security teams.  Refine the ability of those tools to reliably detect threats. 

  • Automate workflows and build integrations between systems using python, shell scripts, git, terraform, ansible, and Amazon Web Services . 

  • Conduct threat hunting to identify gaps in Penn’s security detection capabilities and produce new automated methods to identify and respond to attacks against Penn systems.

  • Maintain knowledge of changing information security threats and technologies.

  • Support the Security Operations Center (SOC) team by transferring tools and techniques into operational capabilities by providing training, support, and working to understand and close gaps in SOC capabilities.

  • Train other teams on the use of tools to enable effective security operations; act as an advocate for new tool adoption. 

  • Act as a backup to the Security Operations Center and provide hands on incident response during major incidents.

  • Coach and direct more junior staff.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field and 3 to 5 years of experience in IT engineering roles, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated expertise as a user or as an administrator of enterprise log management tools.

  • Experience specifically with Splunk or Logscale and with their use for information security event monitoring.

  • Programming experience using python and shell scripts.

  • Python Certification from the Python Institute or equivalent, or published python code.

  • Experience with Linux or UNIX.

  • Demonstrated history of collaboration and good communication.

Preferred

  • Experience with a variety of security tools, such as a subset of IDS/Suricata IDS, Zeek/Corelight, firewalls, and/or system integration and automation.

  • Experience with security log management in Amazon Web Services and/or Azure.

  • Experience in higher education or other distributed IT environments with consensus driven decision making.
