Opportunity:
Virtual Service Operations is searching for a Jr. Traveling Cyber Solutions Engineer to join our team traveling across the United States. As a Cyber Solutions Engineer, you will join an integrated team of engineering and cybersecurity specialists to perform infrastructure and cyber assessments at Customer sites across the United States. With 50-75%+ travel expected over a time period of six months, you will travel to different locations and:

  • Perform inventory assessments for IT and OT systems, such as classic datacenter and facilities management (HVAC OT, Security OT)
  • Perform Cybersecurity Compliance and Risk Assessments, such as DoD compliance evaluations against DISA STIGs and vulnerability scans.
  • Develop supporting infrastructure documentation reflecting the as-built/as-found systems, such as architecture diagrams, network topologies, etc.
  • Prepare detailed and actionable recommendation reports that address learnings from the onsite assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed technical analysis of IT and OT infrastructure and networks. This includes operational control and sensor systems (such as building management), weapon systems, and traditional IT such as on-premise data centers.
  • Identify operational issues and document recommended modifications and/or upgrades to increase overall system resilience.
  • Conduct inventories and risk assessments for critical infrastructure.
  • Perform IT/OT network testing, evaluation and monitoring.
  • Perform detailed analysis of discovered network/infrastructure events and recommend risk management procedures and/or processes.
  • Maintain expertise in the cyber security capabilities of operational technology vendor hardware and software, such as Alerton Compass and Niagara facility control systems.
  • Assess and evaluate computer/network systems technologies, architectures, and products.
  • Maintain knowledge of Department of Defense cyber security policies, standards and guidelines for critical infrastructure. This includes familiarization with applicable DISA STIGs and NIST 800-53 controls.
  • Resolve technical issues and be able to communicate findings with other operation departments within the business.
  • Review designs and specifications for IT/OT networks including secure systems integration.
  • Actively participate in the development of company processes and procedures.
  • Attend company meetings, training seminars, and functions.

Technical Skills We believe academic achievements and technical certificates, balanced with documented professional outcomes, are tools to demonstrate a commitment to continued learning. There are no formal degree requirements nor formal certification requirements for this role. However, once the team is formed, we are expected to rapidly begin assessments. We believe the following technical skills are necessary to rapidly onboard with the team and join the mission:

  • Must be able to understand network design documentation. Sometimes this is a formal system design document/topology, and other times we are given switch configuration files and must piece things together.
  • Demonstration of Cisco Certified Network Administrator/CCNA level understanding of networking aligns with this need.
  • Must be familiar with designing, configuring, and evaluating physical servers and switches. Most facilities utilize Cisco switches with Cisco IOS or NX-OS, however we will likely encounter switches from Dell, Juniper, and other manufacturers.
  • Familiarity with Dell and HP hardware.
  • Evaluate the hardware in terms of cyber security (e.g. switch configs), resiliency (e.g. iDRAC findings), and overall architecture.
  • Certifications in Cisco, Juniper, Dell, or other network switches would be ideal.
  • Must be familiar with virtualization technology such as Microsoft Hyper-V and, VMware ESX. Familiarity with KVM-based virtualization and Kubernetes is a strong benefit but not a requirement..
  • Evaluating operational sites within time constraints requires a certain degree of automation. Experience scripting in Powershell, BASH, Python, or Ansible will be beneficial to help the team build and sustain our automation capabilities.
  • Experience working with DISA STIGs, DoD RMF, and NIST 800-53. The cyber side of the assessments incorporate these standards, so we must be able to evaluate systems against these standards.
Requirements
  • 3-5 years of professional experience with cyber security tools such as Tenable Nessus, SPAWAR SCC, OpenSCAP, SolarWinds, or ArcSight.
  • Please note that pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires U.S. citizenship status, a passport, and a valid drivers license.
  • A security clearance is not required, but preference will be given to candidates with an existing DoD Secret or DoD Top Secret.
  • Must be able to travel extensively, with a minimum expected travel of 50-75%. During “off weeks” we will be writing formal assessment reports.
  • Comfortable traveling via airplanes, cars, and trains.
  • Comfortable working in construction zones.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, independently carrying/operating equipment up to 50 lbs.

What is Important to Us:

  • You are an excellent communicator in writing and speaking.
  • You have the ability to work independently but also value teamwork.
  • Your problem-solving skills are excellent.
  • You are looking for a job where performance appraisals occur regularly, and you look forward to advancing your career.
  • You seek a community of virtue-centered co-workers and clients.
