About the role:

Samsara is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to play a leading role in our Product Security team. The team's goal is to secure our cloud, mobile and embedded software and infrastructure through a secure development lifecycle, including threat models, security architecture and reviews, continuous integration & deployment, and pentesting. We enable the success of Samsara's customers by protecting their data as a precious and privileged resource. We accelerate Samsara's innovation by making Security easy at all stages of work. We protect Samsara’s reputation by continually anticipating and remediating risk.

You’ll be a thought leader on a team that maintains the identity and access management features of our platform, the security and compliance of our infrastructure and our secure software development lifecycle. You’ll make decisions with a significant impact on Samsara. There is a lot of work to do to protect our customers and business against risk, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US except the San Francisco Bay Area and NYC Metro Area. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.

In this role, you will: 

  • Lead organization-wide projects and develop tools that improve the security and compliance posture of our platform
  • Deliver impact by solving the hardest security and compliance problems and enabling products to reach the market quickly and successfully
  • Identify and guide prioritization of opportunities for improvement to our security tools and processes
  • Increase visibility and knowledge of security best practices to raise the bar across the company
  • Act as a multiplier for the team, elevating the impact and output of every team member
  • Influence the vision and roadmap for security and compliance to support our rapid growth
  • Represent Samsara in external-facing forums: writing on our engineering blog, speaking at conferences, collaborating with vendors
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Deep subject matter expertise in authentication and authorization in multi-tenant platforms
  • 12+ years of experience in software design, development, and algorithm related solutions with at least 4 of those years in an architect or leadership role
  • Demonstrated ability to ship production-quality software in a dynamic environment
  • Expertise working with web services at massive scale deployed on Cloud providers such as AWS or Azure
  • Is an expert in writing high quality, performant and maintainable code in a modern programming language
  • Know your way around a UNIX shell and a Linux operating system

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Has 15+ years of relevant industry experience in software development.
  • Has experience working with processes that scale well for a team of 500+ engineers
  • Has experience influencing a company’s product and infrastructure security strategy
  • Enjoys leading and mentoring engineers to think about systems - their life cycles, edge cases, and failure modes.
  • Enjoys enabling cross-functional collaboration between product, finance, and engineers with different focuses (frontend, mobile, firmware, computer vision, ML)

Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles.  For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually. 

We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market positioning.

The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.$147,560—$263,500 USD
