The Integrated Threat and Risk Assessment Centre (ITRAC) assesses threats and develops risk reduction plans for domestic violence and stalking cases in Alberta, as well as provides expert advice and training about threat assessment, domestic violence, and stalking to police, government and other stakeholders throughout the province.
Role Responsibilities
The Integrated Threat and Risk Assessment Centre is looking for a knowledgeable, proactive, and collaborative individual to join our team. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, and under the mentorship of the Understudy training team you will be provided with the tools, learning and guidance required to provide expertise and support in the area of threat and risk assessment to police agencies, corrections entities, Crowns, The Judiciary, Children’s Services, victims programs, and other stakeholders in Alberta.
Working alongside police and civilian threat assessors, you will work to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and operational expertise to conduct independent threat assessment using structured analytical techniques to assist in the formulation of expert opinion and development of case management plans and risk mitigation recommendations for stakeholders. Your key responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to:
- Actively engaging in the ITRAC Understudy Certification Training Program toward Certifying as a threat assessor, typically 18-24 months in length.
- Engaging in training, conferences, workshops, and courses to develop and maintain expertise in threat assessment techniques.
- Reviewing a high volume of documentation and information, as well as conducting thorough data mining, to ensure robust and complete assessments.
- Providing expert recommendations through professional, concise, well-articulated, and defensible reports.
- Conducting objective, thorough, and timely threat and risk assessments by identifying potential victims, risk, and risk mitigation strategies including safety plans and intervention opportunities.
- Preparing and presenting expert opinion testimony, related to threat assessment and domestic violence, in court, as required.
- Supporting fellow Threat Assessor Understudies in the program by participating in group discussions, mock court defenses, etc.
As the successful candidate, you will have excellent knowledge of domestic violence, law enforcement, criminal justice, and court and government agency processes. You will also be familiar with legislation such as the Criminal Code of Canada, FOIPP, PIPA, Privacy Act, etc.
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to accept and integrate feedback, are essential for this role in order to author comprehensive and well-written reports, present recommendations to stakeholders and in court, and ultimately certify as a Threat Assessor. You will use your drive for continual self-improvement to develop yourself and others in current and developing threat assessment techniques. You will also have excellent critical-thinking, use of judgement, and problem-solving skills.
Prospective candidates should note that upon successful completion of the ITRAC Threat Assessor Understudy Program (including passing the Certification examination), it is expected that the Understudy will transition directly into a Threat Assessor role at the HR3 level.

Qualifications
Human Relations Level 2: A minimum of a university degree in a related field (e.g. Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Law etc.) from a recognized post-secondary institution and 2 years of progressively responsible related experience.
Equivalencies will be considered on a 1:1 one basis, as in one year of education for one year of experience.
Please note, if you possess a threat assessor certification, this will be assessed on a case-by-case basis for equivalency and relevance.
Previous experience conducting risk assessments/risk management related to the criminal justice system and/or the forensic mental health system is also preferred.
The following will be considered assets:
- Familiarity with formal risk assessment tools, via either research or clinical application.
- Previous experience administering standardized testing in a forensic, criminal justice, or mental health setting.
- Masters or Advanced degree in a related field (Forensic Psychology, Criminology, etc.)
- Previous case management experience.
- Previous experience with presenting Court Evidence and/or Expert Opinion Evidence.

This position is full time and will be located in Edmonton, Alberta and will work Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours a week.
Please note that this position requires occasional travel throughout the province. The successful candidate must also be able to obtain and maintain a RCMP Enhanced Reliability Security clearance.
