What is a Director of Technology Infrastructure & Operations?

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the Director of Technology Infrastructure and Operations is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s IT and Operational Technology (OT) infrastructure and operations. This includes managing data centers, networks, cloud services, and IT/OT support services to ensure high availability, performance, and security. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing large-scale IT/OT environments, leading teams, and driving technological innovation within a regulated environment.  This role involves leveraging co-sourced vendor services combined with internal staff to plan, build, and run technology services across various domains including service desk, mainframe, network, database, server administration, vulnerability management, and collaboration tools. Additionally, the Director is responsible for ensuring the department aligns with the ITIL framework and focuses on continuous improvement for efficient and reliable service delivery.

What does a Director of Technology Infrastructure & Operations do?

The Director of Technology Infrastructure & Operations is responsible for the following:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and execute the strategic roadmap for IT/OT infrastructure and operations in alignment with the company’s business objectives and overall technology strategy

  • Lead initiatives to modernize and optimize the company’s IT/OT infrastructure, including the adoption of cloud technologies and other emerging technologies

  • Collaborate with other teams (cyber, applications, strategy/governance) to harden infrastructure and maintain robust cybersecurity measures

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant cybersecurity regulations and standards

  • Collaborate with Strategy & Governance team (OCIO) to develop and manage the IT/OT infrastructure & operations budget, strategy, and staffing plans, ensuring cost-effective use of Company resources

Infrastructure Management:

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the company’s IT/OT infrastructure, including data centers, networks, servers, storage, and cloud services

  • Ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of IT/OT infrastructure to support business operations and growth

Operational Excellence:

  • Manage 24/7 IT/OT operations, including Network Operations Center (NOC) to ensure high availability and performance of IT/OT systems and services

  • Implement best practices and standards for IT/OT operations, including ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) and other relevant frameworks

  • Establish and leverage Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to drive efficient, reliable IT/OT services and cost-reduction initiatives

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant cybersecurity regulations and standards

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Lead and mentor a team of technology professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement

  • Provide guidance and support for professional development and career growth opportunities for team members

Vendor Management:

  • Maintain an operational partnership with 3rd party vendors, including Co-Sourced strategic delivery vendor, to optimize and maintain IT/OT support services

  • Leverage relationships with technology vendors and service providers to ensure optimal performance and value

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity:

  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure the resilience of IT/OT systems and services in the event of disruptions

  • Conduct regular testing and reviews of disaster recovery and relevant business continuity plans

  • Lead / Represent the Technology organization during Storm planning and response scenarios

  • Oversee the Technology Incident Response program to support 24/7 company operations in alignment with SLAs

What does it take to be a Director of Technology Infrastructure & Operations?

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in IT infrastructure and operations, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role

  • In-depth knowledge of data center management, network architecture, cloud computing, and ITIL IT operations best practices

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams

  • Ability to develop and execute strategic plans, aligning IT initiatives with business objectives

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and manage positive stakeholder relationships at all levels within the organization

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions

  • Experience with project estimation, capital and expense forecasting, and resource utilization; experience creating and managing budgets

  • Ability to teach and mentor others and build a team culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., ITIL, PMP, CISSP)

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards relevant to the utility industry is a plus (NERC-CIP)

  • Experience leading organizational change through the delivery of people, process, and/or technology improvement initiatives

  • Prior experience building or managing a Co-sourced IT/OT support organization

  • Experience or certification in an Organizational Change Management (OCM) framework such as PROSCI

Pay range: $159,100-246,600
