ABOUT STREAM / DEPARTMENT: WHERE ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

As an Infosec ETL Engineering Team Leader, you will lead a team of engineers focused on delivering high-quality ETL pipelines and data solutions with a strong emphasis on integrating security best practices. You will be responsible for the team's performance, development, and well-being while ensuring timely and secure delivery of projects. This role is ideal for someone with strong ETL expertise and a growing interest in security keen to drive innovation and implement secure data handling practices. You will typically report to an Engineering Manager (EM).

ROLE ITSELF: WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Accountability for Team Deliverables

  • Oversee the delivery of ETL pipelines, ensuring compliance with security and data governance requirements.
  • Maintain high timeliness, quality, and security standards in all team projects and services.

Leadership

  • Implement and refine processes to foster innovation, security, and continuous improvement in ETL workflows.
  • Inspire and mentor team members, building a culture of respect and trust within the team and with stakeholders.
  • Manage upwards effectively by informing your Engineering Manager of progress, risks, and successes.
  • Set clear, security-conscious goals for the team and provide feedback to improve performance.
  • Enhance collaboration and alignment with InfoSec and data governance teams to ensure compliance and security integration.

Security-Focused Design and Delivery

  • Drive the adoption of secure data handling practices in ETL pipelines, including encryption, access control, and monitoring.
  • Ensure the team follows best practices in secure software engineering and ETL development.
  • Incorporate security considerations into technical decisions, balancing delivery speed and security excellence.
  • Identify risks early (technical and organisational) and implement mitigation strategies.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Encourage the team to explore ways to improve ETL pipelines' security, performance, and efficiency.
  • Lead discovery phases for new projects focusing on secure and scalable data solutions.
  • Align the team’s technical strategy with organisational security objectives and data governance standards.

Operational Excellence

  • Guide the team in resolving complex data engineering and security challenges.
  • Ensure appropriate observability and monitoring of ETL pipelines to detect and respond to anomalies.
  • Develop sustainable, security-aware processes to support the team's work.

Key skills and experience:

  • Hands-on experience as an ETL Engineer with a solid understanding of ETL processes and tools.
  • Awareness of data security best practices, including encryption, authentication, and data integrity.
  • Familiarity with security standards and frameworks such as GDPR, ISO 27001, or similar.
  • Proven ability to lead or mentor teams effectively and support professional development.

What will make you stand out:

  • Basic scripting knowledge (e.g., Python) to implement secure automation in ETL processes.
  • Interest in InfoSec topics and willingness to learn about security monitoring and threat detection.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and their security services.
  • Understanding of network security concepts, including secure data transfer protocols.
  • Familiarity with Kanban methodology
