STR’s Cyber Division is hiring a Cyber RF Engineer who will leverage their RF and Signal Processing skills as part of multi-disciplinary teams engaged in solving unique cybersecurity problems. Candidates must be comfortable applying RF principles and techniques to perform analysis and characterization across a diverse set of cyber physical systems. Candidates should have a solid understanding of RF phenomenology to support theoretical analysis, modeling, and hardware experimentation in order to rapidly prototype solutions encompassing hardware and software/firmware components.

We are seeking candidates with previous experience working with both Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and custom RF hardware components for development of experimental systems that enable RF-enabled cyber instrumentation and capabilities. Successful candidates will develop solutions in a collaborative, team environment resulting in quality output products with support for future reuse.

What you will do:

  • Perform RF-related signal processing analyses to formulate relevant transmission waveforms and sensing techniques (e.g., side channels) for cyber physical systems
  • Develop rapid prototype RF solutions to go from free space to bits using a combination of COTS and custom designs
  • Conduct system trade studies and analyses to evaluate proposed hardware architectures
  • Conduct lab-based acquisitions and field testing to collect and analyze characterization data for cyber physical systems of interest
  • Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary cybersecurity investigative team
  • Support proposal efforts by providing input on technical development paths and BOM/cost and schedule estimates.

Who you are:

  • This position requires an active Top Secret (TS) security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government
  • BS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 5 years of related experience OR a MS and 3 years OR a PhD
  • Strong RF design or implementation background with experience in system analysis and component characterization
  • Experience working with RF components (antennas, power amplifiers, low noise amplifiers, filters, mixers, etc.)
  • Knowledge of digital signal processing and time/frequency domain analysis
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to mentor junior engineering staff
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or other programming languages.
  • Experience preparing/presenting technical material to customers and internal staff
  • Proven experience leading from concept to implementation managing cost and scheduling requirements

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in a laboratory environment utilizing test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, etc.) to characterize cyber physical systems
  • Experience with field work, preparing and executing test events for customers
  • Familiarity with EM Field Solvers (e.g., ANSYS HFSS, Sonnet)
  • Design experience with antennas, RF PCBs, RF ICs, and RF transceiver building blocks
  • Knowledge of mechanical design, digital signal processing, and RF propagation effects
  • Experience with digital electronics buses and FPGA hardware designs
  • Experience integrating software defined radios and RFSOC platforms
  • Experience with electronics, digital circuits and communications protocols (op-amps, PCB analysis, i2c, SPI, etc)
  • Knowledge of computer networking and the TCP/IP stack
  • Practical experience with RF systems (e.g. radar, communications systems)
  • Multi-disciplinary experience in computer science, computer networking, computer architectures, cybersecurity, RF data transmission
