Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD Skillbridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD Skillbridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII. 

 

Objective
The Skillbridge intern will train as a Network Evaluator / System Vulnerability Analyst within the HII Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII supervisor, with the goal of develop hands-on expertise in network security evaluation and vulnerability assessment using industry-standard tools like Nessus, Wireshark, and Kali Linux. The program combines technical training in cybersecurity fundamentals with practical experience in conducting security assessments, while also providing crucial exposure to CI/HUMINT operational security requirements specific to DoD environments. By the end of the program, interns will be prepared for Network Evaluator role, having gained practical experience in vulnerability analysis, security tool operation, and DoD-specific compliance requirements.  The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

 

Desired End State (3-month target)
At the end of 3 months, the intern will have a greater gain: 

  • Technical Proficiency 
    • Master core security assessment tools (Nessus, Wireshark, Kali Linux) 
    • Conduct supervised vulnerability assessments on networks 
    • Learn DoD cybersecurity compliance requirements and documentation
  • Operational Integration 
    • Understand CI/HUMINT virtual operations security requirements 
    • Learn internal procedures for threat reporting and incident response
  • Professional Development 
    • Refine technical writing skills for security assessment reports 
    • Build understanding of DoD/civilian workplace culture transition
  • HII Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the Skillbridge intern and considers the Skillbridge internship an overall positive experience. 

 

Assumptions
If candidate is selected and approved, Skillbridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Mission Technologies will fund all travel costs.

Program of Instruction

Training location: Fort Meade, MD

 

Training Plan 
Week 1: Orientation and Fundamentals 

  • Company orientation, security protocols, and workplace policies 
  • Introduction to network security principles and DoD cybersecurity framework 
  • Basic lab setup and familiarization with security assessment tools

Week 2: Security Tools Foundation 

  • Hands-on training with Nessus - configuration and basic scans 
  • Introduction to Wireshark for network traffic analysis

Week 3: Vulnerability Assessment Basics 

  • Fundamentals of vulnerability scanning and reporting 
  • Conducting basic network assessments
  • Documentation standards and report writing

Week 4: Advanced Security Tools 

  • Introduction to Kali Linux and penetration testing concepts 
  • Advanced Nessus configurations and custom scan policies 
  • Technical writing workshop for security reports

Week 5: CI/HUMINT Operations Context 

  • Overview of CI/HUMINT virtual operations (at appropriate classification) 
  • OPSEC requirements and implementation

Week 6: Network Defense 

  • Network architecture and defense-in-depth concepts 
  • Common attack vectors and mitigation strategies 
  • Incident response procedures and documentation

Week 7: Risk Assessment 

  • Risk assessment methodologies and frameworks 
  • Threat modeling and impact analysis 
  • Practice risk evaluations on test cases

Week 8: Advanced Vulnerability Analysis 

  • Complex vulnerability assessment scenarios 
  • Root cause analysis techniques 
  • Remediation planning and prioritization

Week 9: Compliance and Regulations 

  • DoD cybersecurity policies and compliance requirements 
  • Security control validation procedures 
  • Documentation and reporting requirements

Week 10: Integration Phase 

  • Supervised conduct of full vulnerability assessments 
  • Cross-team collaboration exercises 
  • Technical presentation skills development

Week 11: Operational Shadowing 

  • Participation in team meetings and briefings 

Week 12: Final Project and Transition 

  • Final presentation to leadership team 
  • Transition planning and role preparation

Success Metrics:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in core security tools
  • Understanding of CI/HUMINT operational security requirements
  • Professional development milestones achieved


Additional Goals

  • Introduction and integration to Veteran Alliance Network (HII Mission Technologies Veteran Resource Group).

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted within final 12 months of active-duty service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

  • Bachelor’s in relevant field, with 9+ years of Network Engineer / System Vulnerability Assessor Experience
  • TS/SCI w/CI Poly required
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP, CEH, CISM, CompTIA Security+)
