Overview
Carollo Engineers is an internationally recognized environmental engineering firm that specializes in the planning, design, and construction of water and wastewater facilities. We are seeking a Security and Emergency Technologist to support our vision of becoming the best water consulting firm.
As a member of the Carollo team, the Security & Emergency Technologist will play an important role in delivering innovative and effective solutions to enhance the security and resilience of water and wastewater systems. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and collaborative skills to support diverse clients in identifying vulnerabilities, developing security master plans, and designing protective measures for critical infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and contributing to projects, providing technical expertise, and advancing Carollo’s capabilities in Resilience and Sustainability Technical Practice.
Responsibilities
- Conduct risk and vulnerability assessments: Identify and evaluate potential threats and vulnerabilities to water and wastewater systems, utilizing industry-standard methodologies such as AWWA J100 and other relevant frameworks. Provide actionable recommendations to mitigate identified risks.
- Develop emergency and security master plans: Create plans that address client-specific needs, incorporating strategies for preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. Ensure alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Design security measures for critical infrastructure: Develop plans and specifications for physical and cybersecurity solutions, such as access controls, surveillance systems, and network security protocols, to safeguard critical water and wastewater assets.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams: Work with other engineers, planners, and professionals across geographic regions to deliver integrated solutions that address client challenges effectively.
- Provide technical expertise: Act as a subject matter expert in security engineering, risk management, and security and emergency planning, contributing to project success and mentoring team members where appropriate.
- Prepare and deliver presentations and reports: Develop clear and concise technical documentation and present findings to diverse audiences, including utility managers, regulatory bodies, and community stakeholders.
- Maintain familiarity with industry standards: Stay current with relevant AWWA, WEF, and other industry standards, ensuring projects meet or exceed established benchmarks for emergency management and security practices.
- Contribute to service development: Support the evolution of the firm’s emergency management and security offerings by researching emerging trends, identifying new opportunities, and refining methodologies for client services.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a relevant educational foundation, and possess experience in the water and wastewater industry, with a focus on security engineering and infrastructure protection. This position requires technical competence, problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to apply industry standards to real-world challenges. Candidates must demonstrate a track record of working effectively in both independent and collaborative environments while delivering quality results to clients with diverse needs and geographic locations. A balance of technical knowledge, project management skills, and industry experience is needed for success in this role.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental), Security or Emergency Management, or a related discipline.
- Training or coursework in security engineering, critical infrastructure protection, or emergency management.
Experience:
- 5 to 10 years of professional experience in the water and/or wastewater or related industry.
- Knowledge of risk and vulnerability assessment methodologies, security and emergency master planning, and infrastructure security design practices.
- Familiarity with AWWA and WEF standards relevant to security and emergency management practices.
- Project management skills, with the ability to work independently and within collaborative teams
- Excellent communication skills, including technical writing and public speaking abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with advanced education, specialized certifications, and direct experience in security and emergency management practices will bring additional value to this role. A strong background in advanced security engineering, critical infrastructure protection, and innovative technologies will enhance Carollo’s ability to provide industry leading solutions to clients. Preferred qualifications reflect the ability to lead more complex projects, support business development efforts, and contribute to the growth of the firm’s Resilience and Sustainability practice.
Education:
- Master’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental), Security or Emergency Management, or a related discipline.
Licensure:
- Professional Engineer (PE).
Certifications & Experience:
- Certification as a security professional (e.g., Certified Protection Professional [CPP], Physical Security Professional [PSP], or Certified Information Systems Security Professional [CISSP]).
- Certification as an Associate or Certified Emergency Manager (AEM/CEM)
- Direct experience with security and emergency management, including mitigation, preparedness/planning, response, and recovery for water and wastewater utilities.
- Experience with emerging technologies and innovations in the security and water/wastewater sectors, such as smart sensors and cybersecurity for operational technology.
Proven ability to support business development efforts, including proposal preparation and client engagement.
