Job Duties

The IT Compliance Analyst and Information Security Officer at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is a critical role dedicated to creating a secure, accessible, and compliant IT environment. This position combines expertise in IT governance, accessibility standards, and information security to ensure that all systems and practices align with regulatory requirements and the school's mission to provide equitable education for students with sensory disabilities.
The role requires a comprehensive understanding of IT compliance frameworks, accessibility laws, and secure software development practices, coupled with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. The individual must demonstrate leadership in guiding compliance initiatives, facilitating training, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and accountability. With a commitment to continuous learning and ethical responsibility, this role strategically supports VSDB's vision by ensuring technology remains a reliable, transformative tool for education and operations, enabling students, staff, and stakeholders to thrive in a safe and inclusive environment.
The successful candidate will have experience with IT compliance with ADA and other accessibility requirements, and candidates should demonstrate a foundational understanding of accessibility frameworks like WCAG and Section 508, as well as basic knowledge of accessibility laws and standards, including ADA. Experience with assistive technologies such as screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA) and accessibility testing tools is required. Familiarity with creating accessible web and mobile content using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is needed. Basic skills in documenting compliance processes and contributing to remediation plans are preferred. The candidate should also be able to collaborate with cross-functional teams, learn inclusive design principles, and stay informed about evolving accessibility standards and best practices while continuing to improve their technical expertise.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field is required.
• A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may substitute for some experience requirements.


Experience:
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in IT manage and support, information security, accessibility compliance, or related fields.
• Proven experience with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, ADA, Section 508) and knowledge of required audits to ensure compliance.
• Hands-on experience with information security frameworks and practices (e.g., NIST 800-53 or SEC530 preferred).
• Experience working in a K-12 educational or public sector environment, particularly with accessibility and inclusion-focused technology, is required.
• Familiarity with secure software development practices, risk management, and incident response is required.

Licensure/Certification:
• Currently have or must obtain one of the following certifications within 12 months of hire. Must maintain an industry-recognized certification for accessibility technology.

o Certified Accessibility Tester (CPAT)
o Accessible Document Specialist (ADS)

• A proficiency level of "Survival" in American Sign Language (ASL) as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire this proficiency within three years.
