Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role

Our team is responsible for the foundational authentication and authorization mechanisms that ensure secure communication between services across Block's infrastructure. We play a critical role in safeguarding service interactions within Block's data centers, GCP, and AWS environments. This includes driving the evolution of identity, credential, and access management to support the scalability and security demands of a rapidly growing organization.

Operating at the intersection of cutting-edge security practices and robust cloud infrastructure, our mission is to modernize Block's identity infrastructure. The Cryptographic Identity & Authorization Infrastructure team is focused within this scope, working on projects that include production credentialing, internal certificate authorities (PKI), access policy tooling, access control for our production infrastructure and more.

You Will

  • Lead and Develop the Team: Hire, mentor, and support the Cryptographic Identity & Authorization Infrastructure team, fostering a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Shape Identity Systems: Drive, alongside Identity Infrastructure tech leads, the design and implementation of scalable authentication and authorization solutions across Block's infrastructure.
  • Enhance Security Practices: Partner with other engineering and security teams to ensure robust identity management systems and improve Block's overall security posture.
  • Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with product teams, infrastructure teams, and other stakeholders to align identity solutions with business needs and technical roadmaps.
  • Stay Ahead of the Curve: Monitor emerging trends in cryptographic identity, cloud infrastructure, and access management, leveraging advancements to modernize Block's systems.

You Have

  • Leadership Experience: 3+ Years of proven success leading highly collaborative engineering teams, ideally in cloud environments such as GCP or AWS, with a focus on security or identity-related projects.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, align stakeholders around shared goals and create clarity in the execution of complex projects.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: A demonstrated ability to work across multiple teams and workstreams, engaging with technical leads and cross-department stakeholders to drive shared initiatives while staying focused on supporting and developing your team.
  • Problem-Solving Mindset: A results-oriented approach with the ability to tackle complex challenges and lead projects in dynamic environments.
  • Technical Expertise: A strong understanding of authentication, authorization, and cryptographic identity systems, with experience in large-scale, distributed infrastructure.
