The Opportunity:

Washington State University (WSU) in Everett WA has started a new research and education program to meet burgeoning demand for computer scientists with expertise in cybersecurity. This initiative is supported by $2 million in Washington state funding. We invite applications for a 9-month academic year, full-time career-track teaching faculty in the broad area of cybersecurity at the assistant or associate professor level.  The positions will be considered for a 2-year fixed term appointment (with renewal contingent upon performance). Some specific cybersecurity areas (including but not limited to) are systems/application security, privacy-preserving computing, applied cryptography, formal methods for security, security of machine learning systems, machine learning for security, hardware security, IoT and cyber-physical systems security, differential privacy, and applied cryptography. The successful candidate will be expected to implement evidence-based pedagogy in undergraduate computer science education with focus on cybersecurity. The new faculty will have numerous collaboration opportunities with several large initiatives within the WSU system including (but not limited to) the WSU-PNNL Advanced Grid Institute (AGI), DOD-funded CySER Institute for cybersecurity, and NSF-USDA AgAID AI Institute.

Required Qualifications for Scholarly Assistant Professor:

  • Master’s in Computer Science or a related discipline by August 15, 2025.

  • Demonstrate strong teaching, communication, and leadership skills, and optionally bring real-world experience working on cybersecurity tools and systems, and experience in developing cybersecurity related curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications for Scholarly Assistant Professor:

  • PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline by August 15, 2025.

Required Qualifications for Scholarly Associate Professor:

  • Master’s in Computer Science or a related discipline by August 15, 2025 and  at least 5 years of relevant teaching or industry experience. OR PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline by August 15, 2025 and at least 3 years of relevant teaching experience.

  • Demonstrate strong teaching, communication, and leadership skills, and optionally bring real-world experience working on cybersecurity tools and systems, and experience in developing cybersecurity related curriculum.

Duties: The job duties of successful candidates at either rank includes primarily teaching undergraduate courses in cybersecurity and other relevant computer science and engineering courses; participating in the continuous teaching assessment activities of the relevant units and WSU campuses; effectively communicating and interacting with students; and collaborating with others within the unit, the University, or other organizations including regional partners such as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

9 Month Academic Year Salary:

Scholarly Assistant Professor: $95,000 - 105,000

Scholarly Associate Professor: $110,000 - 125,000

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

This is a temporary non-tenure track position.


Temporary End Date: It is anticipated the successful candidate will begin their appointment no later than August 16, 2025. This position is eligible for an early academic start of August 1, 2025. The position will be considered for a 2-year fixed term appointment. This is a temporary position expected to end on May 15, 2027. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
