Raytheon is seeking a Principal Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Engineer (AI/ML) with expertise in creating, maintaining, and securing AI/ML workflows, testing.  The Principal AI/ML Engineer will be responsible for implementing and supporting Digital Engineering systems and software AI/ML solutions for several Raytheon Technologies program areas. This person can be located in either: San Diego, CA; McKinney, TX; or State College, PA.

The ideal candidate will join the RTX team and will have experience extending open-source models, designing and optimizing machine learning pipelines, automated system and software testing, while integrating security best practices throughout the entire development lifecycle. This role is crucial for ensuring the scalability, reliability, quality, and security of our AI/ML enabling teams to deploy cutting-edge models into production efficiently and securely. The Principal AI/ML Engineer may participate in new business activities, such as proposals and architecture/designs as needed. This role may also periodically lead, or mentor junior team members, execute trade studies, develop prototypes, create metrics and prepare and present technical Information to an audience. This candidate should have a good understanding of muti-disciplined execution and complexity of product designs.

What you will do

  • Systems Engineering
    • Architecture system concepts
    • System engineering requirements and how they impact lower-level component implementations
    • Optimizing different stages from a proposal through production utilizing AI/ML algorithms
    • Integrating AI/ML into system and software level automated testing
       
  • AI/ML Workflow Management
    • Develop, deploy, and maintain scalable AI/ML workflows.
    • Automate and optimize data ingestion, model training, evaluation, and deployment pipelines.
    • Manage and extend open-source models to suit organizational needs.
       
  • Pipeline Development & Model Training
    • Build, monitor, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for AI/ML applications, ensuring seamless integration from development to production.
    • Optimize machine learning model training, validation, and deployment processes.
    • Collaborate with Data Scientists and ML Engineers to integrate new models into the production environment efficiently.
       
  • Security & Compliance
    • Embed security best practices throughout the AI/ML lifecycle, ensuring data integrity, model safety, and compliance with industry standards.
    • Implement automated security testing and monitoring across the entire AI/ML lifecycle.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant security, privacy, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Cloud Infrastructure & Automation
    • Manage cloud-based AI/ML infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure) with a focus on scalability and high availability.
    • Automate infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
    • Monitor, log, and resolve performance issues in AI/ML pipelines using tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
       
  • Collaboration & Mentorship
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Data Scientists, Software Engineers, and Security teams, to ensure seamless integration of AI/ML workflows.
    • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership in AI/ML best practices.
       

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 10+ years’ experience with emphasis in Software Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering
  • Automated Unit, Integration and System testing leveraging common frameworks (design and implementation)
  • Experience extending open-source AI/ML models and deploying them in production environments
  • Experience AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, KubeFlow).
  • Experience with security practices, tools, and frameworks relevant to AI/ML systems (e.g., SAST, DAST, vulnerability scanning)
  • Leadership in implementing and accelerating AI/ML adoption within a digital thread from system requirements to devops implementation
  • The ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance after day one is required. U.S. Citizenship is required, as only U.S. Citizens are eligible for a security clearance
     

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Proficiency with at least one major programming language (Python, Java, Ruby, C++, C#, Go)
  • Agile methodologies (including agile leadership and planning)
  • Background in COTS/FOSS product installation, configuration and integration
  • Experience in commercial product development / leadership
  • Exposure to Information Assurance and Security Compliance standards, e.g. ICD-503 or Risk Management Framework
  • Understanding of DoD engineering process

The salary range for this role is 124,000 USD - 250,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
