About the Role

You’ll be working as a principal software developer on the Incident Response and Readiness team, responsible for delivering the cloud-based software that helps solve the real-world security problems that IT professionals and Incident Responders face. We develop assessments and tools for customer risk management and support Arctic Wolf security services with incident data management to keep our customers safe and informed. 

The principal developer is responsible for providing multiple teams technical direction to deliver high value, performant software solutions. The principal developer will provide technical guidance and direction to multiple teams of developers through the design, implementation and automated/integration testing of our software. They will also provide guidance on best practices for running, monitoring, and maintaining our system. In addition, they indirectly influence the work of the department and closely related Arctic Wolf teams. 

Some of your day-to-day responsibilities will be: 

  • Accountable for the technical direction of the overall Department 

  • Technically knowledgeable on technologies and interactions across components within the department (is the final voice on technical decisions) 

  • Reviews HLDs and provides feedback and alignment to our Aspirational Architecture 

  • Represents technical needs for department to other R&D VP Areas 

  • Supports teams in Department by joining team and providing implementation support for more difficult or error prone areas of coding 

  • Demonstrates value in needed standards such as test automation across multiple teams 

  • Propose, review and approve coding standards and PR standards (may need to do some mentoring to support) 

  • Identifies and leads department level improvement initiatives 

  • Effectively drives alignment and consensus (final technical call) 

We value a culture of sharing, so every team has the opportunity to share their work with the entire department during our monthly R&D Demos. Once a year we hold a department-wide Hackathon, teaming up across all R&D teams over four days to collaborate and build cool ideas outside the normal project scope. While innovation is the focus, some of these ideas do make it into our products. 

About You

You’re a highly advanced software developer who makes important product decisions regarding direction and scope. You work with the product team through early access to roadmap plans to assess project feasibility and long-term design decisions. You collaborate with the engineering manager to support the team development in line with tactical design needs and long-term developer growth. You work with the QA team to prepare for significant new features and prepare a useful testing environment. Your experience across a wide section of the development field informs rapid integration decisions in a growing and diverse environment. You identify and collaborate with multiple teams or organizations and have a deep understanding of software systems that span multiple teams. In addition, you are comfortable presenting to the executive team. 

Here are some of the core technologies we use and teach across our Applications teams. You should have experience in one or more of these, or similar technologies: 

  • Java 

  • Python 

  • React 

  • AWS 

  • Git 

  • Docker 

  • Kubernetes 

  • Terraform / Cloud Formation or other IaC tools 

In addition, you have proven leadership experience from previous projects, regardless of title held. You have the ability to perform programming tasks and large engineering projects with independence and expertise. You will be responsible for guiding and mentoring other staff members and will regularly lead technical projects. You have a high level of mastery over software development best practices and building reusable design patterns. You have a history of delivering successful projects, as well as some lessons learned from failures.
