The IT Security Associate, a member of the Intrusion Detection and Incident Response team in the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation at The Ohio State University, is highly curious about how things work and is willing to take something apart to find the answer, digging deep to obtain accurate information and working to separate the signal from the noise. This position, under a high degree of supervision, assists other team members with monitoring and detecting IT Security related events by reviewing detections within IT security applications/tools, reading network and account activity reports and dashboards, and escalating findings to senior members of the team. The role also assists with intrusion detection activities and incident investigations, reviews raw network and application/service logs and shares interesting findings with the team, performs data collection activities, reviews incoming team emails and ensures messages receive an appropriate and timely response, and participates in the on-call rotation.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree -OR- equivalent combination of IT work experience and education

  • Two or more years of demonstrated experience working in an IT role providing technical support, engineering, or IT security

  • Experience either reviewing raw activity logs or inspecting events using a log/event app

  • Daily and frequent use of an email client (Outlook, etc.) in a work environment, including advanced tasks such as creating e-mail folders and mail processing rules, applying automatic labels/categorization, etc.

  • Proficient in researching, identifying, and applying IT security best practices

  • Ability to organize and prioritize to meet established deadlines

  • Possesses excellent verbal & written communication skills and the ability to communicate security concepts to technical and non-technical audiences alike


Desired Education and Experience:

  • Hands-on experience in Intrusion Detection and IT Security Operations

  • Solid understanding of running searches and collecting data from Splunk or a similar log/event management tool

  • CISSP, CRISC, CISA, or relevant IT security or cloud certification

  • Understanding of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and incident response of cloud-based services

  • Experience with using scripts and/or command-line tools for text extraction and analysis

  • Use of data from external IT Security information sources including commercial threat intelligence services
