ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary:

The Data & Information Architect I position at the City of Tucson’s Information Technology Department is responsible for guiding the design and evolution of a unified cloud-hosted data platform, enabling self-service data insights for departments and establishing a foundation for advanced analytics capabilities. This position focuses on data strategy, quality, governance, integration, analytics capabilities, privacy, and fostering a strong data culture while ensuring data usability.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Information Technology Director. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with IT staff to assess business information needs and use cases, developing models through visualization, refining solutions, and designing detailed data and information-level architectures for partner use. Guides project and program execution to align with these designs. Breaks down data silos, improves data accessibility, and drives data-driven decision-making to enhance advanced analytics and business intelligence capabilities.

  • Contributes to the architecture repository by maintaining contributed models and supporting the City of Tucson’s architecture standard practices, and body of knowledge through peer reviews and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Researches documents and records lessons learned for continuous improvement.

  • Contributes to the development of strategic plans for data architecture, standards and practices for information and data. Monitors emerging trends and technologies, sharing information with peers, and contributing to the enterprise IT strategies and plan, most notably to information and data components.

  • Acts as a consultant to project managers, business owners, and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) by advising on solution implementation, monitoring adherence to plans, and identifying and mitigating risks

  • Provides guidance to ensure compliance with the City’s information architecture standards and policies, partnering with governance, risk, and compliance areas to enforce data strategies and governance.

  • Conducts analysis to explain and provide support to data SMEs on standards and use of models by delivering coaching, conducting peer reviews, assisting in solution design, hosting outreach and training sessions to promote best practices and standards.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: Five (5) years of directly related experience

Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Business, Engineering, Operations, or relevant applied analytical / sciences field

Three (3) of five (5) years experience in Database Architecture or Information Technology Architecture.

Experience applying National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework and/or the Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies (COBIT)
Strong understanding and experience enacting information management principles and best practices, ideally using Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK) and guidelines from the Data Management Association International (DAMA).

Experience with data integration tools and technologies.

The City of Tucson is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Data & Information Architect to play a pivotal role in establishing and leading our Business Intelligence oriented data and information architecture practice, as well as contribution to our strategic plan for data use and availability throughout the City’s operations. Scope is inclusive of the full data landscape managed and administered within the City of Tucson.

The following certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire / prior to the completion of the probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
