Senior Cybersecurity Specialist – MNS Digital Process Systems Engineering

This position is on the Digital Process Systems team within the McGuire Nuclear Station Engineering organization.  Employees at this level manage work in areas of specialization with minimal supervision.  Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve.

This position will support the Cybersecurity program for operational assets.  The work includes hands on activities such as account/log audits, patching, upgrades, antivirus protection, account management, cyber asset inventory, support of new installations, response to identified threats and vulnerabilities, and other items as directed.  The work also includes maintaining McGuire’s cyber security program through documenting cyber asset assessments and enforcing programmatic requirements for the site.

This work will ensure compliance with both NRC and Duke Energy enterprise cybersecurity requirements.  This position requires understanding of the integrated plant systems as well as processes to secure plant cyber assets. The analyst shall demonstrate an understanding of the impact of cybersecurity processes on nuclear safety and security, generating systems, and the overall electric grid.

This position provides support for nuclear site process computers, various plant control and data acquisition systems such as the Distributed Control System (Ovation), Operator Aid Computer (OAC), Security Computer system, OSI/PI Systems, Security Event and Information Management System (SIEM), and Plant Network System.,

This is a hybrid position at McGuire Nuclear station. Work schedule is four tens, Monday – Thursday, with occasional night or weekend support required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day activities in support of cyber security program and policies. This may include maintenance (patching/upgrade), support of new installations or upgrades, and other items as directed.
  • Maintain updated documentation for the cyber security program, including asset assessments, configuration control sheets, password control sheets, PMMD documentation, etc.
  • Assess and respond to complex distributed control system (DCS) cyber security events and incidents
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems for digital control and data acquisition systems.  This includes troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance support, updates, vulnerability patching and back-ups for various plant digital systems and firewalls. 
  • Provide support to Plant Operations staff on issues with plant digital systems
  • Work with vendors on hardware/software issues on Plant Process Digital systems
  • Perform Cyber and DPS reviews for Engineering Change (EC) development
  • Provide inputs to budgets and long- range plans
  • Completes non-routine technical projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces
  • Member of the MNS Cyber Security Assessment Team (CSAT) and Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT)
  • Competent in the use of tools and techniques to physically and logically harden CDAs and networks to reduce vulnerabilities to cyber attack
  • Executes work orders and work requests through established work management system

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity or related technical discipline
  • 5 years related work experience with required degree
  • In lieu of required degree and 5 years related work experience listed above, High School/GED and 10 years of direct related experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous Nuclear Cyber Security experience and familiarity with related NEI guidance
  • Ability to determine the safety, security, or emergency planning function of a digital subcomponent in a complex system
  • Ability the read Plant Drawings (Control Wiring Diagrams, One-line diagrams, Logic Diagrams, schematics)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer networks (Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, switches, routers, firewalls, etc.)
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of operating systems such as Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, 2019 , Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux
  • Demonstrate knowledge of OSI/PI historian
  • Demonstrated knowledge of real time/data acquisition/control systems, including hardware, software, and interfaces
  • Previous Industrial work experience with Plant Monitoring System, Plant Security Computer, and Cyber Security Defensive Architecture
  • Demonstrated ability to work on assigned projects with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization
  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities.

Specific Requirements  

  • Nuclear Plant unescorted access 
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty. 
  • Occasional work during nights and weekends or extended workdays may be necessary to support nuclear regulatory compliance, unit outages, or emergent equipment issues callouts. 
  • Typical Office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work in an industrial environment safely.
