International Health, Safety, and Security Analyst

Primary Duties:
- Monitor current events and health, safety, and security developments affecting international travel, with a particular focus on locations where GVSU conducts activities for all long-term study abroad, internships abroad, independent study, and sponsored programs. Provide updates and reports as needed to relevant constituents. Send wellness, checks, informational messages, and travel updates to any impacted travelers in-country.
- Develop and maintain an incident reporting system and provide reports regarding the number, type, and severity of reported incidents in a continuous effort to identify new approaches/strategies for crisis management and to ensure that polices and procedures are followed.
- Provide assistance in the event of an international crisis.
- Manage travel registration and tracking of travelers.
- Manage and update website content related to health, safety, security, and insurance resources.
- Provide independent critical incident support for low level incidents (travel logistics, stolen or lost passport, using insurance abroad, etc.)
- Serve as the primary education and training manager for international risk, health and safety. This includes developing and facilitating trainings, predeparture orientations, and information sessions on best practices in health, safety, and security abroad such as: emergency procedures, managing conduct issues, working with GVSU’s emergency assistance provider, etc.
- Manage the Travel Advisory Appeal process for long-term study abroad students.
- Manage international health insurance program including: reviewing all requests for exemptions, sending confirmation of enrollment, assist with claims, and preparing outreach & training materials to campus constituents.
- Collaborate with the Director of Study Abroad & International Partnerships to oversee GVSU’s risk management systems related to international programs, including: developing strategy, recommending protocols and policies, and preparing materials for the International Risk Assessment Committee to review in response to emerging threats.
- Serve as the primary contact for student inquiries, including about travel policies for specific situations, travel registration, travel abroad health insurance, travel risks, medications abroad, accommodations and be able to provide tailored advice utilizing U.S. State Department, OSAC, CDC, and other resources.
- Provide detailed risk assessment of university travel including approval/disapproval recommendations.
- Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in international program management, campus crisis management, travel risk management and/or emergency response.
- Significant experience living, working, or studying abroad.
- Considerable knowledge of current events and world geography.
- Collaborative approach to problem solving.
- Ability to work with absolute discretion in sensitive situations, sometimes involving medical history or needs, disclosures of sexual misconduct or disciplinary actions including arrest or detention.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and exercise diplomacy during crisis resolution.
- Excellent communication skills and superb attention to detail.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Five or more years professional experience in crisis management, emergency response, travel risk management, and/or international program management.
- Familiarity with travel risk management practices and security resources.
- Graduate or professional degree in higher education, crisis management, international affairs, or other fields relevant to this position.
- Proficiency in a second language
Department/Division: Padnos International Center/CSCE
Salary & Benefits: Minimum starting salary of $61,000, commensurate with experience.
