Position Summary
Incumbents of this position provide towing and first response services at incidents which occur within the Tunnels System; reports unsafe road conditions to the Highway Operations Center (HOC) and corrects such conditions where possible; and performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
Duties and Responsibilities
The shifts for these positions vary and are subject to bi-annual shift bids and/or operational need. The shifts are 6:00am - 2:30pm, 2:00pm - 10:30pm, and 9:30pm - 6:00am. The location for this position will be 100 Massport Haul Road, Boston, MA.
- Maintains surveillance and provides immediate response for all types of incidents from assigned emergency station or platform.
- Provides first response to all petroleum-based spills which occur within the Tunnels System. Communicates road and traffic conditions, hazardous spills, and injuries at incidents to the HOC.
- Provides logistical support for State Police at the incident site including, but not limited to, the placement and removal of traffic cones and removing debris from the roadway.
- Provides assistance to disabled motorists by means of pushing/towing disabled vehicles to a safe location.
- Maintains vehicle assistance reports and logs for all activities.
- Assists the State Police and/or Maintenance Department in emergency situations, such as accidents, mechanical failures, weather, etc.
- Performs routine checks of assigned vehicles, equipment, emergency station/platform, and assigned communications equipment prior to start of shift and reports any equipment malfunctions to the HOC and Supervisor immediately.
- Cleans, washes and fuels assigned vehicle.
- Performs other related highway maintenance duties as required.

Qualifications
Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least 3 years of satisfactory experience in operating trucks and construction and maintenance equipment with the ability to read and interpret written instructions and diagrams. Must have working knowledge of the use of various tow rig/set-up.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED; must possess a valid CDL Class B with air brakes endorsement. (Verification of CDL must accompany application); must possess a valid Massachusetts Class C Hoisting License with endorsements to operate a front end loader and backhoe.
In addition, applicants must have had or successfully complete Authority-provided training within a reasonable period which meets the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (q)(6) (ii), First responder operations level. Proof of such training shall be in the form of a certificate, such as (but not limited to) a record from the Massachusetts Fire Academy certifying completion of their 8-hour Emergency Fuel Spill Response - Recognition and Identification Training Program.
