Position Location: This position is preferably based out of our Chicago office (with hybrid/remote work flexibility), but permanent remote candidates will also be considered; light travel requirements. HUB office accommodations on a hybrid basis would also be an option in most major cities.
About The Position
This is a truly unique opportunity for an experienced compliance professional to join the rapidly expanding legal and compliance team of a multi-billion-dollar, high growth, dynamic company. Our Deputy Chief Compliance Officer (“Deputy CCO”) will be a highly visible, senior leader within HUB, reporting directly to our CCO while also working closely and collaboratively with senior commercial and legal leaders to oversee and support the design, implementation, and maintenance of efficient and effective centralized compliance programs that are able to identify, prevent, detect, and correct noncompliance with applicable laws and regulations and industry best practices. In furtherance of these efforts, the Deputy CCO will be responsible for assisting the CCO in leading, developing, and managing a team of current and future risk, licensing, and compliance professionals while also enjoying unfettered access to HUB leadership and to peers/counterparts in industry groups and client organizations.
The ideal candidate will have extensive compliance experience in a larger insurance and/or financial services firm and be highly knowledgeable of, and possess the ability to quickly learn, the requirements impacting our business, including state Insurance laws and regulations, privacy & cybersecurity regulations, and federal contracting rules.
Specific Responsibilities and Goals
- Monitor and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Support and drive the ongoing development and implementation of a culture of compliance within HUB by bringing together compliance experts at HUB and identifying opportunities to implement best practice programs and initiatives across the enterprise.
- Experience leading a team and preferably, leading a function as the senior leader of that function.
- Leverage technology and field leaders/resources to develop and administer uniform policies, procedures, and best practices (across a decentralized operational footprint) designed to prevent violations of applicable regulations and encourage managers and employees to report suspected fraud and other improprieties, without fear of retaliation.
- Establish appropriate controls necessary to better ensure compliance in the field.
- Provide guidance and strategic direction to colleagues on day-to-day compliance and ethics issues and partner with the business to help drive effective risk and compliance priorities.
- Execute and enhance initiatives to validate the strength and sustainability of HUB’s compliance program, including the following:
- Keep up to date with new laws and regulatory requirements and ensure communication of best practices/new rules to field operations; and
- Develop and maintain key risk and performance metrics and provide reports on a regular basis, and as directed or requested, to keep senior management informed of the operation of the compliance program and compliance efforts.
- Develop and support compliance training and education initiatives for employees.
- Lead and contribute to both the organizational risk and sustainability committees.
- Collaborate with external legal counsel and regulatory bodies, as necessary.
- Prepare and submit annual written reports to leadership and the Board on the operation, adequacy, and effectiveness of HUB’s compliance policies, procedures, and controls.
- Investigate and report compliance violations or irregularities and prepare reports for internal and external purposes; interact with regulators on compliance issues.
- Work with other experts to develop market-differentiating, in-depth analyses of, and insightful, practical implications relating to, key developments and topics in the legal/regulatory space.
- Develop an annual compliance plan that reflects HUB’s unique characteristics and resource needs.
- Coordinate efforts related to compliance audits, reviews, and examinations.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 10+ years’ experience as a CCO or very senior compliance professional for either a larger insurance (preferred) or financial services firm.
- Experience leading a team and preferably, leading a function as the senior leader of that function.
- Solid familiarity with and/or the ability to quickly learn the requirements impacting our business, including state insurance laws and regulations, privacy & cybersecurity regulations, and federal contracting rules, coupled with the ability to apply that knowledge strategically in light of changing regulatory and business initiatives.
- Experience developing, monitoring, and enforcing appropriate policies and procedures.
- Ability to confront difficult issues and challenge others when necessary.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to clearly communicate technically complex developments, issues, and analyses in actionable ways.
- The ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize a varied workload and competing priorities in a fast-paced, and at times unpredictable or demanding environment.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to cultural, technological, and business changes.
- Public speaking as well as oral presentation and written skills a plus.
- Strong negotiating and conflict resolution skills.
- Collegial and collaborative approach to working effectively with others to build strong professional relationships both inside and external to HUB.
- Outstanding organizational skills, including prioritization and follow-up.
- Direct experience in brokerage, carrier, or financial services “operations” a plus.
