The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. Although the full salary range for this position is posted, the target hiring range is $23.33-$29.16. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work fully in person for the duration of your training period (at the Wellington Webb Building: 201 W Colfax Ave). After training, employees are eligible to work a hybrid schedule, further details will be discussed during the interview process. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.
What You’ll Do
Department of Finance
The Department of Finance manages the city’s investing, fiscal analysis, budgeting, debt and asset management, tax assessment and collection, and accounting functions as well as establishing, maintaining, and enforcing fiscal policies, practices and procedures for the entire City and County of Denver. The Department commits to Denver residents the delivery of these services through a financial structure that mirrors the best practices of both the public and private sectors. This commitment promotes better service, enhanced performance measures, maximum accountability, and improved business processes.
About the Treasury Division
The Treasury Division collects, records, and deposits all City taxes and revenues, and disburses money as required by law. The Treasury Division's other responsibilities include: enforcement of tax compliance; and administration of the City's property tax programs. The mission of the Treasury Division of the Department of Finance is to promote and facilitate voluntary compliance, strive to ensure fairness, and collect tax revenue that funds city services. By carrying out this mission in a professional, efficient, and customer-oriented manner, we maximize the financial resources available to meet the needs of the community and its citizens.
In this Tax Compliance Agent I role, you will collect delinquent taxes to generate revenue for the city and enforcing compliance of local businesses with state and municipal tax law. This includes placing phone calls to taxpayers, potential taxpayer visits, and mailing letters or sending email reminders to taxpayers for tax collections,
Specifically, as the Tax Compliance Agent I you will:
Collect delinquent sales, use, occupational, lodgers, and personal property taxes and handle issues of compliance determined by the diversity, size, habitual delinquency of the business, and the total of the taxes owed.
Research and verify debtor information, collects evidence to prove ownership, residency, business activity, and tax liability, and locate property subject to liens for delinquent taxes.
Estimate, assess, and collect delinquent taxes by contacting debtor or designated representative, explain legal obligations for restitution, and negotiate payment agreements within specified parameters.
Process lien placements, submit claims as needed to obtain payment, determine penalty and interest charges on delinquent taxes, prepare liability information for bankruptcy claims, and may assist in negotiating payment agreements with specified parameters.
Investigate businesses for compliance with licensure for collection of sales, use, and/or lodger tax and occupational tax registration through field examination and systematic inquiry and explain state law and municipal ordinances for compliance.
Assemble, organize, and maintain case files, reports of partial payments and full collection of debt, uncollectible accounts, and records of correspondence.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Required Minimum Qualifications
Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of experience relating tax information to the public.
Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
Licensure & Certification: Requires a driver’s license at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
