SMX is seeking a Junior Information System Security Officer (Jr. ISSO) – Cross Domain Solution (CDS) to provide foundational cybersecurity support for systems that facilitate secure data transfer between networks of varying classification levels. This entry-level role focuses on assisting with security implementation, monitoring, and compliance activities in accordance with established policies and frameworks. The Jr. ISSO works under the guidance of senior cybersecurity professionals to ensure compliance with Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements, support assessment and authorization (A&A) processes, and contribute to the security posture of CDS environments.  In accordance with Army Regulation 25-2, the ISSO will assist the Information System Security Managers (ISSM) in meeting their duties and responsibilities. This is a full-time onsite position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cross Domain Solution Security Support:
    • Assist in monitoring and enforcing security policies for CDS systems in alignment with DoD and organizational cybersecurity guidelines.
    • Support security evaluations and monitoring activities to ensure CDS systems maintain their authorization to operate (ATO).
    • Help maintain and update security documentation, including System Security Plans (SSPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    • Conduct basic security checks to identify potential vulnerabilities and escalate findings to senior ISSOs.
    • Perform user access and permission audits.
    • Provide required CDS reports to ISSM
  • Assessment and Authorization (A&A) Assistance:
    • Assist with the Risk Management Framework (RMF) process by gathering security control evidence and documentation.
    • Help track and manage security control assessments, Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms), and vulnerability remediation efforts.
    • Coordinate with security teams to support ATO maintenance efforts.
    • Manage CDS authorization records in eMASS
  • Security Operations and Incident Response Support:
    • Monitor system logs and alerts under the supervision of senior ISSOs to identify security anomalies.
    • Assist in investigating security incidents, documenting findings, and implementing corrective actions.
    • Participate in incident response exercises and training to develop security expertise.
  • Configuration and Change Management Support:
    • Assist in reviewing and documenting configuration changes to CDS systems in accordance with security policies.
    • Support audits of CDS system configurations to ensure compliance with baseline security standards and STIGs.
  • Training and Collaboration:
    • Receive training on CDS security best practices and compliance requirements.
    • Work closely with system administrators, network engineers, and senior ISSOs to support security initiatives.
    • Stay updated on cybersecurity trends, DoD policies, and evolving threats to CDS environments.
    • Collaborate with CDS Security Control Assessor (SCA) to evaluate and convey system risks affecting enterprise networks and mission data.

Required Skills, Experience & Education

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 1-3 years of experience in cybersecurity, information assurance, or IT security-related roles.
  • CompTIA Security+ or equivalent
  • Must have a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for SCI read on.
  • Familiarity with DoD, IC, and Army cybersecurity policies, RMF guidelines, and NIST SP 800-53 controls.
  • Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of CDS technologies and cybersecurity fundamentals.
  • Risk Awareness: Ability to identify security risks and escalate concerns as necessary.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to prepare and present basic security documentation and reports.
    • Effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in documentation and compliance training.
  • Adaptability and Learning Agility: Willingness to develop expertise in CDS security and evolving threat landscapes.
  • Problem Solving: Basic Analytical skills to support security investigations and incident response.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work in a team environment and contribute to security initiatives.

Desired Skills/Experience

  • Hands-on experience with Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), such as Forcepoint Trusted Gateway System (TGS) or Radiant Mercury.
  • Basic understanding of DoD cross-domain security policies, including DoDI 8540.01 and NSA Raise-the-Bar (RTB) guidelines.
  • Experience creating and maintaining security documentation (SSPs, POA&Ms, Configuration Management Plans).
  • Knowledge of network security principles and vulnerability management tools.
