The expected hiring range for this position is:

$210,100.00-$298,500.00.

About the Role:

The Senior Director of Security and Emergency Management Division (SEMD) is responsible for developing and leading programs for safeguards and security, emergency management, and cybersecurity to ensure the safety and security of the Laboratory’s employees, users, affiliates, visitors, and physical and information assets. The SEMD Senior Director reports directly to the Deputy Director for Operations (DDO)/Chief Operations Officer (COO) and is a member of the Laboratory’s Senior Leadership Team. The position is responsible for leading security operations, protective force, security engineering, global services and campus access, fire department, emergency management and operations and cyber security for the 6,800-acre Batavia, Illinois site and the Lead, South Dakota Far Site, which is the location of the new Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment – Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (LBNF-DUNE). The position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders on security matters to develop and implement security and cybersecurity strategies, policies and procedures, including sensitive information and data,


What your day-to-day as the Senior Director for Security and Emergency Management at Fermilab will look like:

  • You will provide leadership and management of SEMD services, organization, and policies, including site access security, information and cyber security, personnel security, and emergency management.
  • You will develop and manage SEMD staffing and performance, budget, information technology, training, and infrastructure and ensures all SEMD activities are conducted in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, standards, and regulations.
  • You will provide strategic and proactive leadership for SEMD, exemplifying and embedding Fermilab’s values related to safety, security, and quality across all SEMD activities.  Establishes clear operational goals to align SEMD priorities with the Laboratory’s mission, ensuring they are reflected in the work of every team member.  Delegates responsibilities effectively and ensures accountability to achieve the organization’s objectives.
  • You will work with the DOE Fermilab Site Office’s officially designated Federal Security Authority (ODFSA) to determine the appropriate policies and procedures to be used to implement Fermilab security programs.
  • You will develop and maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with mission/scientific program leadership, to establish and implement security, cyber security and emergency management expectations laboratory wide and ensure short- and long-term requirements for SEMD services are aligned with mission directorates goals, plans and projects.
  • You will partner with Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FFDG), the DOE Office of Science customers and stakeholders, and other National Laboratories to ensure the continued development and implementation of best business practices.
  • You will develop and maintain strong relationships with government agencies and law enforcement organizations. 
  • You will implement an effective Quality Assurance and Quality Control program for all SEMD work, including conducting self and third-party assessments, audits, and investigations to identify and correct performance gaps and/or promulgate noteworthy practices.
  • You will serve as a member of the Laboratory's Senior Management Team, providing advice and counsel on security, cyber security and emergency management matters.
  • You will assess and mitigate cybersecurity risks and manages incident response and recovery efforts.
  • You will develop and implement site access and cybersecurity awareness and training programs for all employees and contractors.
  • You will stay up to date on emerging cybersecurity threats and trends.
  • Educate the organization on cybersecurity best practices.
  • Provide supervision or leadership of a team including hiring, promotions, performance reviews, training, disciplinary actions, team exits, and other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.


Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Bachelor's degree in security management, business administration, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 15+ years of professional experience.
  • Master’s degree with 10+ years of professional experience, including security and or emergency management experience at a large site/campus, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Extensive experience in managing a security and/or emergency management function of an industrial, university, or government complex or campus with demonstrated operational improvement in efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Strong knowledge of site security and cybersecurity principals, practices, technologies, risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Experience managing a security program that includes physical, cyber, and personnel security.
  • Experienced in managing people and effectively interfacing with a diverse set of demanding customers, including experience leading in a bargaining union environment
  • Strong written, verbal, and graphic communication skills with the ability to effectively discuss, invoke and foster engaged dialogue, and communicate with all levels of the organization and external customers and stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate and sustain strong internal and external relationships.
  • Demonstrates accountability and establishes clear responsibilities and processes to ensure commitments are met and results are measurable throughout the organization.
  • Exhibits a strong bias for action and actively demonstrates the ability to manage conflict and crisis with calm confidence. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement security policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with government agencies and law enforcement organizations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the highest level.
  •  Relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CRISC.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
