MDAR: The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources mission is to cultivate a robust and equitable agricultural economy, promote a safe and resilient food system, and preserve a healthy environment for Massachusetts farmers, animals, and consumers.
The Food Security Infrastructure Grant (FSIG) Program is a large grant program serving all sectors of the food system in Massachusetts – producers, processors, distributors, and markets. It was created to strengthen the Massachusetts food system and ensure that individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth have access to food, with a special focus on food that is produced locally and equitable access to food. In fiscal year 2025, there were 162 awards totaling over $24 million dollars.
The Food Security Infrastructure Grant (FSIG) Coordinator will support the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources’ Division of Food Security to administer the grant program. The Coordinator will be responsible for day-to-day aspects of the program as well as work on long term projects related to data analysis, evaluation, and communications. The Coordinator will also be expected to conduct site visits to ensure funded projects are progressing, confirm organizations are complying with grant requirements, and build relationships with different food system actors. The Coordinator will assist the FSIG Program Manager and Division Director with grant program management.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with outreach and maintaining regular contact with grant applicants and recipients via email, phone, and in-person meetings.
- Work with grant recipients to ensure reporting and grant requirements are being met.
- Provide any needed support with the contracting process between the grant recipients and the Commonwealth. Tasks can include drafting contracts and helping recipients complete required documentation.
- Review project expenditures (such as vendor invoices submitted by grant recipients) to ensure expenditures are allowable, within the grant award budget, and that the documentation/justification is sufficient.
- Coordinate and conduct site visits to ensure compliance with grant and contract terms.
- Attend regular meetings with the Division of Food Security staff to keep the team updated on tasks and collaborate on Division projects as needed. Examples of Division projects include supporting the development of a newsletter and maintaining a database.
- Support the grant review process as needed. Tasks can include organizing application materials, reviewing applications, note taking during review meetings, and answering questions from applicants.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask.
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
- Quantitative skills and an understanding of budgets.
- Ability to collaborate with a team as well as work independently.
- Ability to travel to different sites throughout Massachusetts.
- The ability to work with large data sets.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
- Experience working with awards and contracts.
- Friendly and supportive demeanor.
- Knowledge of food systems and food supply chains.
- Experience working on a large grant program.
This position is a contractor role, limited to 1,800 contract hours for one year, and is not eligible for benefits, with the exception of earned sick leave. The hourly rate includes an additional $2.68 per hour as compensation in lieu of benefits.
This is a contracted position through April 2026, with the opportunity for extension based on performance and program needs.
