Manager, Technical Systems

Reporting directly to the Vice President of IT, this position is pivotal in bridging the gap between Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT), ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance of systems within this crucial grey area. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of both OT and IT systems, along with the ability to execute against a developed strategy to implement and maintain solutions that enhance efficiency, security, and reliability. Responsibility will cover OT security as one aspect and being the lead technical manager on all key projects identified. This will be an essential liaison position between the IT discipline and other departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • System Integration, Segmentation and Optimization:
    • Collaborate with OT, Automation, and IT teams to manage and protect systems effectively, ensuring business integration and functionality across all platforms
    • Audit, identify, and remediate segmentation and security gaps across Business IT, communications, and OT Networks
    • Continuously optimize systems to enhance performance, streamline processes, and minimize downtime
    • Develop and implement formal change control, business continuity, disaster recovery, and incident management protocols across these areas
    • Maintain comprehensive list of all technical systems (include RACI, dependencies, risk matrix)

  • Cyber Security Management:
    • In conjunction with the VP of IT, the Cyber Security Manager, and relevant OT teams, develop and implement robust security protocols to safeguard both OT and IT systems against cyber threats, ensuring compliance with industry standards, frameworks, and regulations. (e.g. Purdue, NIST, MITRE ATT&CK)
    • Conduct regular security audits and risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and implement appropriate mitigation strategies
  • Risk Management : 
    • Assess risks and dependencies associated with the convergence of OT and IT systems, and develop strategies and remediation plans to mitigate potential disruptions to operations
    • Stay abreast of emerging threats and technologies in both OT and IT domains, proactively addressing the potential risks before any impact or escalation

  • Project Management:
    • Participate in, or lead cross-functional projects involving the integration, upgrade, or expansion of OT and IT systems, ensuring adherence to project methodologies, timelines and budgets
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to define project requirements, objectives, and deliverables, and provide regular updates on project status and milestones

  • Training and Development
    • Develop training plans, associated budget, and timelines in line with above expectations.
    • Provide training and mentorship to OT and IT staff on best practices for system integration, security, and maintenance. Foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing to enhance the skills and expertise of the team.

  • Vendor Management:
    • Evaluate and select vendors for OT and IT systems and services, negotiating contracts and service level agreements to ensure delivery, cost-effectiveness and quality.
    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors, overseeing vendor performance and resolving any issues or disputes that may arise.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Active CISSP certification preferred
  • Applicable Service Management certifications (e.g., ITIL and ITSM-related) are preferred
  • 5 years+ of experience as a lead across both IT and OT environments, preferably in the mining, industrial, or resource sector
  • Expert level knowledge of common business platforms (Microsoft, SAP, etc)
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft BackOffice suite of products
  • Expert knowledge of networks, infrastructure, telecommunication, AV, and business ERP platforms
  • Deep understanding of OT protocols and standards (e.g., SCADA, PLC, DCS) and IT protocols and frameworks (e.g., TCP/IP, OSI model, ITIL)
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity principles and best practices, with experience implementing security measures and awareness training for both OT and IT environments
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical users
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
