Overview

The Assistant Director of Security and Security Captain reports to the Director of Facilities and Security and is responsible for supervising all security personnel. The Assistant Director of Security and Security Captain is responsible for providing a safe and secure campus that enhances a quality learning environment for employees, students, and guests. The Assistant Director of Security and Security Captain ensures the physical security for campus property and equipment through adherence to department procedures and policies. The Assistant Director of Security and Security Captain is responsible for ensuring all security personnel are properly trained and able to perform their duties and ensure a safe campus. This position may be required to work non-business hours for operational effectiveness.

Responsibilities

Manage, supervise, assign, and evaluate all security personnel. Ensure supervisors perform the required job activities and responsibilities to always provide for a safe campus environment. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Evaluating, counseling and mentoring subordinates and shift personnel on job performance.
- Oversee training for new security officers and monitor their progress
- Conduct performance evaluations and mentor security officers as needed
Supervise progressive disciplinary action up to and including termination.
Conduct interviews as necessary.
Assists in the investigations of crimes and other offenses.
Plan daily assignments and conduct daily briefings with security officers.
Assess operational and equipment needs.

Responsible for reviewing the weekly schedules and approving security officers timesheets and leave requests.

Oversight of all shift operations to always ensure the campus is a safe and secure environment.

Delegate specific tasks to appropriate personnel and inform the Director of Security regarding potential problems/issues and recommend possible solutions.
Manage door access control systems.
Manages the patrolling, inspecting, and securing premises.
Manages emergency operation for incidents on campus.
Coordination with law enforcement officers and/or fire department officials, or other emergency responders such as EMT’s and provide emergency assistance as needed.
Review Security Officer Daily Logs and report any issues to the Director of Security.
Manage the security camera system with a high degree of knowledge and proficiency.
Manage the university visitor management system.
Manage parking pass administration and enforcement of all university operated parking lots, both on and off campus.

Operates fire alarm panel.

Develops and recommends policies relating to assigned areas of responsibility of responsibility. Coordinates the development, implementation and interpretation of operating procedures.

Assists in insuring that the goals and objectives for the department and the university are communicated and achieved.

Recommends operating budgetary needs for assigned areas of responsibility.

Responsible for liaison activities among functional area(s) and other departments.

Prepare written reports to include, but not limited to, incident reports, assists with preparing annual Cleary Report, and campus crime logs.

Responding, compiling, and reporting all information regarding theft, alarms, accidents, and other incidents that may occur.

Report any building utility/service issues, as observed, to the Facilities Department.

Monitor alarms/panels for emergencies that might arise.

Serves as a member of the University Security Committee and other committees as assigned.

Responsible for immediately reporting any issues regarding university vehicles operated by the Security Department or other University personnel to the Director of Facilities.

Responsible for developing and monitoring that proper controls are in place for the University master keys/box housing master keys and university vehicle keys that are available to be check-out of inventory by authorized university personnel or third-party contractors.

Responsible to ensure vehicle log sheets are properly completed.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required
POST certified, or comparable, is preferred

Experience:

6 years of security or law enforcement experience
3 years previous supervisor security or law enforcement experience

Possession of a valid Nevada driver’s license and ability/clearance to drive company vehicles

Excellent verbal and written communications and be proficient in MS Office suite of software to include MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint

Must have sufficient hearing to respond to normal verbal speech, alarms, and radio and telephone communications
Must have sufficient visual acuity to read and understand faculty/staff listings, posted orders, maps, computer screens, check identification, and to distinguish the faces of faculty/staff, contractors, vendors, guests and visitors
Must be able to stand, walk and/or drive for up to 90% of the assigned shift
Must have a command of the English language that is easily understood
Ability to work independently
Ability to operate handheld radios and communication equipment
Ability to work all shifts
Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
Must be CPR certified or obtain within 6 months
Must be OC spray (pepper) certified or ability to obtain within 6 months
