Position Summary

The Information Security Engineer I assists in designing, implementing, and protecting National University systems, networks, and data while contributing to a culture of security awareness and continuous improvement. The incumbent monitors and responds to security alerts, assists in investigating incidents, and analyzes potential threats and vulnerabilities. Additionally, maintains security documentation, researches emerging cybersecurity threats, and enforces best practices to enhance the university’s security posture.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor and respond to security alerts from various tools (e.g., SIEM, endpoint protection, firewalls).
  • Assist in investigating security incidents and support incident response efforts.
  • Perform initial triage and analysis of potential vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Support the implementation of security controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to ensure proper configurations and patch management.
  • Contribute to security awareness training initiatives and user education.
  • Maintain and update documentation for security processes and incidents.
  • Stay informed on emerging cybersecurity trends, vulnerabilities, and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field required.
    • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of related experience preferred.
  • CompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA CyberOps, or similar entry-level certification preferred.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts (e.g., malware, phishing, network protocols).
  • Familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS) and network fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive security information responsibly and maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding of vulnerability management and patching best practices.
  • Attention to detail when reviewing security logs and documentation.
  • Knowledge and experience with security tools such as SIEM, endpoint detection, or vulnerability scanners.
  • Understanding of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and basic scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell).

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position.
