Systems Engineer (Network & Linux, Security Focus)

Toyon Research Corporation is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Systems Engineer with a strong security focus to join our program network and computing infrastructure team. The Systems Engineer will play a key role in managing and securing our on-premises IT infrastructure, encompassing both Windows and Linux environments hardened in accordance with DISA STIGs. Responsibilities will include deploying, configuring, and managing network devices (switches, firewalls), hypervisors, and essential security tools like Splunk (for SIEM), Trellix endpoint security suite (ePO, DLP, Application Control), and Nessus vulnerability scanner. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of both Windows and Linux administration, networking, security best practices, and a commitment to maintaining a highly secure and compliant environments.

Responsibilities

• Assist system administrators in deploying and configuring components of our Windows Active Directory environment, including PKI infrastructure
• Install, configure, and maintain virtualization platforms, their guest VMs, and shared storage (e.g., VMware vSphere/ESXi, Hyper-V)
• Administer and maintain our Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environment, including system hardening, and troubleshooting
• Assist system administrators in remediating identified vulnerabilities
• Develop and maintain comprehensive system documentation
• Participate in incident response activities
• Collaborate with other IT team members to ensure the seamless operation of the IT infrastructure
• Stay up-to-date on the latest security threats, vulnerabilities, and industry best practices

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 4+ years of experience in systems administration, including both Windows and Linux environments.
• Proven experience implementing and maintaining DISA STIGs across multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, network devices)
• Minimum Security+ equivalent or greater certification
• Hands-on experience with network device configuration and management (switches, firewalls)
• Experience with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware vSphere/ESXi, Hyper-V)
• Proficiency in administering and troubleshooting RHEL systems
• Hands-on experience with security tools such as Splunk, Trellix endpoint products, and Nessus
• Strong understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, firewalls)
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Desired Skills:

• Experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
• Scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python)
• Relevant security certifications (e.g., CySA+, CISSP, RHCSA, CCNA)

The annual pay range for the Systems Engineer (Network & Linux, Security Focus) position is $110,000 to $170,000.

The posted pay range values provide the candidate with guidance on annual base compensation for the position, at a full time level of effort, exclusive of overtime, bonus, and benefits-related compensation, over a range of qualifications that may fit hiring objectives. Toyon Research Corporation will consider the individual candidate’s education, work experience, applicable knowledge, skills and training, among other factors, when preparing an offer of employment.
