Thales Defense & Security, Inc. has an opening for an intern within the Systems Engineering department for 8 weeks during the summer of 2025. This position will be responsible for some entry-level assignments that will provide exposure to the software engineering job family. This position is located in the Germantown, MD office and reports to the Manager of Engineering.

 

Please Note: The Intern must be prepared to start in Germantown, MD in Summer 2025. 

Responsibilities

The Systems Engineering Intern will contribute to the development and support of diverse solutions gaining hands-on experience with the computer infrastructure underpinning DRT’s Software Defined Radio (SDR) mission systems, including computers, storage, networking, and specialized hardware (i.e. GPUs and FPGAs). The skills you can expect to develop are:

  • Supporting Systems Engineering tasks related to designing and implementing complex computing systems.
  • Learn Systems Administration best practices for managing and maintaining server environments.
  • Study of Network Engineering principles for configuring and troubleshooting network infrastructure.
  • Contribute to Systems Engineering I&T activities involving hardware integration and optimization.
  • Participate in DevSecOps initiatives, focusing on automation, security, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required. - Applicants selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited university of college and have completed at least 2 semesters within the engineering field of study. Pursuing in one of the following fields preferred: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology.
  • Experience programming in modern languages
  • Experience with any of the following is a huge plus:
    • Linux/Unix System Administration (Red Hat preferred)
    • Low Level Software development in C/C++ (DPDK preferred)
    • Systems Programming (Linux device drivers preferred)
    • Automating system deployment using scripting tools (Ansible preferred)
    • Hardware/Software interfaces (PCIe preferred)
  • Must be proficient in English both verbal and written.

The hourly pay range for this role is $22.00 - $25.00 USD. The hour pay range provided is a good faith estimate representative of the experience level for the role described above.  TDSI considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
