About This Opportunity

IDCARE is partnering with the University of Queensland to advance world-leading research in cyber security. As Industry Professor the successful candidate will have the opportunity of working at the cutting edge of research with impact in creating new knowledge that specifically addresses technology challenges that are advancing crimes of mass-deception.

As Industry Professor, the successful candidate will provide strategic research leadership with a strong emphasis on translating cutting-edge research into practical solutions that strengthen resilience against cybercrime and mass-deception. They will proactively address national and international cybersecurity challenges, leveraging their extensive network of stakeholders across community, industry, and government to drive innovation, commercialisation, and measurable real-world impact. A key focus will be on advancing UQ Cyber’s internationally recognised research through the cultivation of strong external partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration—particularly at the nexus of cyberpsychology, human factors, and cybersecurity.

Beyond research, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in mentoring academic staff, fostering a collaborative and positive academic environment, and supporting the Head of UQ Cyber, Professor Ryan Ko, in expanding the Centre’s strategic growth, influence, and visibility. The role will also include contributing to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, developing micro-credentials, supervising students, and building meaningful connections between academia and professional practice to advance UQ Cyber’s mission.

About You

We are seeking an accomplished academic leader with a PhD (or equivalent) in cybersecurity, human factors, or a related discipline, and more than 15 years of experience as both a researcher and practicing professional. Our ideal candidate will be internationally recognised for their expertise, with a strong record of collaboration with global institutions and frequent contributions to public discourse through media and expert commentary.

They will bring a dynamic and proactive leadership style, with a demonstrated ability to inspire high-performing, diverse teams and foster a collegial, forward-thinking organisational culture. Their research track record will reflect consistent excellence—evident in high-impact publications, the successful supervision of HDR students, and a strong history of securing competitive research funding.

Equally important is their ability to build and sustain strategic partnerships. With deep industry engagement, they will be skilled in attracting diverse funding streams and leading research that not only delivers commercial outcomes but also shapes national and international policy and practice.
