About the role
As the Cyber Incident Response Specialist, you will manage incident response activities and support the continuous improvement of cyber security risk management for the University and its entities.
This is a key role in our team. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), you will:
Manage first and second level cyber security incident response activities, including understanding the root cause of an incident to investigate and provide effective resolutions, in line with MQ Cyber Security incident response processes, escalating as required.
Manage penetration testing and auditing using commonly known tools and techniques as well as build scripts to identify weaknesses within the MQ IT environment, analyse and interpret the output to make recommendations for continuous improvement.
Provide support to the CISO with conducting reviews, analysis and documentation of architecture and design documents from MQ IT to investigate and address security concerns with stakeholders.
Partner with stakeholders to understand and resolve cyber security concerns, ensuring the gathering of facts and information from relevant sources to appropriately diagnose issues and present resolutions.
Prepare documents, reports, presentations for the CISO, including providing support with senior management, Council and committees reporting.
Provide cyber security knowledge and expertise to support projects across the University and entities to ensure compliance with industry and MQ IT security standards.
Coordinate, support and contribute to continuous improvement of MQ IT security systems and processes.
Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences with various levels of understanding of cyber security.

The IT Information Security team is tasked with helping the University to achieve compliance requirements and protect the University people, information, and systems from information security risks.
This role will be based at Macquarie University, Wallumattagal campus, North Ryde.
About You
You have worked in a similar role with strong experience in investigating and identifying the root cause to get to the bottom of a cyber security incident. You have managed penetration testing into systems and web applications, as well as experience or exposure in breaking into IT systems.
You will have excellent coding skills (competent across multiple coding languages), and technical ability to automate processes to create efficiency.
You will have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences and able to translate technical jargon into simple speak.

Proven experience in managing cybersecurity incident response activities and identifying root causes for effective remediation.
Expertise in cloud environments and handling security incidents in hybrid cloud setups.
Demonstrated proficiency in penetration testing and using various auditing tools such as NMAP, cloud auditing tools, Nikto, Dirbuster, Nuclei, Netcat, DNS interrogation tools, Tenable.io, and Burp Suite.
Strong understanding of foundational cybersecurity concepts with the ability to recognize potential compromise scenarios.
Proficiency in scripting and programming languages, including Bash, PowerShell, and Python.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable criteria
Tertiary qualification or certificate in IT or relevant discipline.
*This position requires a criminal record check. AGSVA security clearance may be required.
