Position:                           Cyber Underwriting Specialist  

Reporting to:                   Group Head of Cyber Product

The Role

The Cyber Underwriting Specialist is integral to the design, development and delivery of our Retail cyber insurance products and services. You will support the end-to-end product development lifecycle, and leverage technology advancements in underwriting and risk management to ensure that both Hiscox and our customers stay one step ahead of the ever-evolving threat landscape.

You will focus on developing the customer digital journey, together with the integration of new technologies to streamline underwriting processes. You will work closely with stakeholders to continuously enhance the customer experience and assist in the underwriting of our most complex cyber risks.

This is an exciting time to join our global Centre of Excellence for cyber products and proposition. We are pioneering the next generation of our cyber products for all our retail customers – regardless of which market they are in. As such, you will need a broad understanding of insurance product development, underwriting, claims and exposure management. You will also need to understand the cyber market, and be able to advise retail BU underwriters on policy wording, risk appetite, risk selection and emerging threats.

This permanent role reports directly to the Group Head of Cyber Product and can be based from any Hiscox location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with underwriting, technology, and product teams to design and optimise the cyber underwriting journey by integrating technological solutions to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist in the assessment and underwriting of cyber risks, including evaluating client exposures, risk profiles and policy requirements.
  • Leverage data analytics and technology tools to improve underwriting accuracy, pricing, and risk evaluation processes.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and provide actionable recommendations to enhance the customer experience and operational effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines, tools, and templates for the effective underwriting of cyber risks.
  • Provide expertise and support to internal teams on complex cyber risk scenarios and coverage options.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams on project management tasks, ensuring timely and successful implementation of initiatives to improve underwriting workflows and digital capabilities.
  • Stay up-to-date with cyber risk trends, emerging technologies, and industry regulations to advise on potential underwriting impacts and policy changes.
  • Support the development of training programs and resources for team members on cyber risk underwriting and technology integration.
  • Communicate complex underwriting decisions and cyber risk information clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in an underwriting or business development role.
  • Excellent communication (English proficiency) and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and manage stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to thrive in a Group level function working with different markets, countries and cultures.
  • Experience with end-to-end policy lifecycle and risk management practices.
  • Familiarity with underwriting software and platforms including the use of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
  • Knowledge of current market conditions and emerging opportunities in cybersecurity.
  • Good knowledge of security frameworks, standards, and best practices (e.g., NIST, ISO, CIS, etc.).
  • Ability to think analytically and creatively to assess and interpret data to drive decisions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, Cybersecurity, or a related field is desirable.
  • Proven experience in cyber underwriting or a related risk management field is desirable.
  • Experience of trading in retail insurance markets in the US, UK and EU is highly desirable.
