As a Cybersecurity Externship Mentor, you will guide students through hands-on externship projects, providing technical expertise and professional development support. You will help bridge the gap between education and employment, preparing students for their first roles in cybersecurity through project supervision, mentorship, and mock interviews.
What you will do
- Mentor and guide cybersecurity graduates through real-world externship projects.
- Provide technical expertise in cybersecurity tools, practices, and frameworks.
- Manage multiple student projects, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables.
- Evaluate projects, identify deliverables, and develop independent solutions.
- Lead project planning, documentation, and reporting.
- Organize and conduct mock technical interviews to prepare students for job applications.
- Adapt teaching methods to different learning styles and paces.
- Collaborate with mentors and staff to maintain a supportive learning environment.
- Present effectively in team meetings, 1:1 coaching sessions, and stakeholder presentations.
Requirements
- ~10 years of professional experience in cybersecurity.
- Strong ability to manage projects independently, even with limited client documentation.
- Experience mentoring or training junior cybersecurity analysts.
- Hands-on expertise with tools such as Splunk, Atomic Red Team, ELK, Nmap, Wireshark, Metasploit, Burp Suite, and others.
- Proficiency in incident response, vulnerability management, threat modeling (MITRE ATT&CK), SIGMA detections, YARA rules, and continuous monitoring.
- Familiarity with U.S. cybersecurity standards (e.g., NIST CSF, ISO).
- Working knowledge of Git/GitHub workflows and project management platforms (e.g., JIRA, ClickUp).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities.
- Availability to work up to 30 hours per week and to mentor students during evening hours (Eastern Time).
Nice to Have
- 3+ years working specifically with U.S. cybersecurity regulations and compliance.
- Experience with the hiring process for cybersecurity analyst roles, including conducting technical interviews.
- Active engagement in the cybersecurity community (e.g., open-source contributions, blog writing, conference speaking).
- Existing professional network within the U.S. cybersecurity industry.
