Description

 

THECB is observing a hybrid telecommuting schedule with employees required to be in the office at least two (2) days per week.

The agency is located at the George Herbert Walker Bush State Building located in the Capitol Complex at 1801 N. Congress Ave. Austin, TX 78701.

Internship position is a part-time, up to 29 hours per week, pro-rated position which will end on or before August 31, 2025. 

 

Introduction Paragraph/General Description:

This position is a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Cybersecurity team and supports the agency’s cybersecurity efforts. As a Cybersecurity Intern, you will work closely with a team of experienced cybersecurity professionals to gain direct experience in a dynamic and challenging environment. You will have the opportunity to gain experience of various aspects of cybersecurity including Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) and Operations, and contribute to the development and implementation of security measures to protect the agency's systems and data. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position reports to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

General Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Develops THECB cybersecurity policies and standard operating procedures for GRC and Operations teams.

·         Utilizes Archer eGRC system to create Authorization Packages consisting of system categorization, controls allocation, system security plan, remediation plan, risk acceptance, and security authorization.

·         Conducts software security reviews to ensure agency cloud computing services comply with TX-RAMP requirements.

·         Contributes to the development and implementation of security awareness training and simulated phishing campaigns.

·         Compiles and tracks vulnerabilities and mitigation efforts and assists with application vulnerability scans.

·         Develops cybersecurity program metrics and reporting for CISO and agency executives.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Knowledge of current trends and developments in cybersecurity.

·         Knowledge of cybersecurity risks, threats, and vulnerabilities.

·         Knowledge of basic cybersecurity concepts and best practices.

·         Skill in using personal computers and general office software, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.

·         Skill in gathering, analyzing, and communicating complicated information in a clear, effective, organized, concise, professional, and courteous way with individuals from diverse social, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds. 

·         Ability to effectively organize time, manage, and complete multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

·         Ability to solve problems and answer questions independently using trustworthy sources.

·         Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with agency information resources and data.

·         Ability to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability toward changes in assignments.

Qualifications

 

Required Minimum Education and Experience:

·         Currently a university undergraduate student or graduate student in Cyber, Information Security, or a related field.

Preferred:

·         Prior experience with GRC and Cyber Operations.

·         Prior experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power-BI, Power Automate, Power Apps)

·         Familiarity with cloud security concepts.

·         Strong research, analysis, writing, and communication skills.

Physical Requirements and/or Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a standard office environment and requires:

·         Hybrid office environment (at home/on-site), with a minimum of 2 days on-site. 

  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance at work;
  •  Frequent use of personal computer, copiers, printers, and telephones;
  •  Frequent sitting.
  •  Frequent deadlines, as a team member, and in direct contact with others.
