Who we are:

We are the UK’s biggest port, central to the country’s economy and ambitions for growth. We connect the UK to the world, but we are much more than a conventional port.

We are driven by our purpose to protect and improve the 95 mile stretch of the River Thames which is tidal – from Teddington Lock on the border of Surrey, through the heart of London, Kent, Essex and out to the North Sea.

The role:

The Port of London Authority is expanding its cyber security team to support the protection of critical systems that support the operations of the PLA and keep traffic moving on the River Thames.

We are looking for an ambitious cyber security apprentice to join our team and support a wide range of projects and processes to modernise our critical IT and OT estate in a supportive environment.

The successful candidate will support our ongoing compliance initiatives, as well as the implementation and delivery of new systems and processes within the department. They will contribute to the discovery and remediation of gaps in our defences and help to ensure vulnerabilities are escalated.

The role will be shaped by the candidate, and we will support ongoing development for industry-recognised certifications.

What we are looking for:

You will have:

  • A passion for IT and, ideally, a hobbyist level of knowledge of cyber security concepts.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to challenge appropriately and contribute to continual improvement.

For this role, the criteria are:

  • For level 3 apprenticeships and above, apprentices without English and Mathematics at level 2 must achieve level 2 prior to taking their End Point Assessment.
  • Dynamic and self-motivated with excellent problem-solving capabilities and time management skills.
  • Committed to self-development and continuing professional development to maintain, refresh and update relevant skills.

Desirable criteria:

  • An understanding of cyber security concepts such as CIA, risk management, vulnerabilities, and security controls.
  • Basic knowledge of networking and concepts of authorisation and authentication.
  • Understanding of tactics and techniques attackers can use to compromise systems.

In return, we offer a competitive benefits package:

  • 28 days annual leave + Bank Holidays
  • Medical Cash Plan
  • Generous pension
  • Onsite parking with electric charging
  • Access to Occupational Health, Mindfulness, Counselling and Physiotherapy
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Access to MyGymDiscounts
  • Salary Sacrifice Car Scheme

Please note the recruitment process may involve two stages. The first stage will be a Microsoft Teams video call followed by a second stage in person interview.

For further information or if you would like to have an informal chat about the position, please contact Jack Bowker (Cyber Security Analyst) on email Jack.Bowker@pla.co.uk.

The PLA are not registered with the UK Home Office and do not sponsor candidates who require a visa or work permit to work in the UK, therefore an offer of employment cannot be made unless you currently hold the rights to live and work in the UK.
