Hop aboard Damen Naval; the naval division of the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group, where 12,000 professionals work worldwide. Damen Naval delivers advanced naval vessels to clients all over the globe. By implementing the most innovative technological developments in practice, we continue to push the boundaries of the shipbuilding industry. You can be part of our team! Are you ready for duty?

The role

As a Technical Specialist Vulnerability at Damen Naval, you contribute expert knowledge to the design and engineering of naval vessels with a focus on survivability. You’ll work on R&D projects and proposals, advise on system layouts, and verify performance during FAT, HAT, and SAT.

Your main goal: reduce vulnerability by applying smart system design and advanced technologies. You collaborate closely with colleagues in structural, mechanical, and electrical design to achieve integrated solutions.

In early design phases, you conduct trade-offs and advise on optimal layouts. During engineering, you analyse resilience and risks and support detailed design controls. You also explore and apply innovative technologies, combining practical insight with academic research.

Key accountabilities
In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing as Technical Specialist to the Research & Development, Proposals, and Engineering departments by developing, reviewing, and advising on deliverables such as aspect management plans, aspect analysis reports, calculations, simulations, technical specifications, and test/validation protocols for complex projects.
  • Supporting Verification and Validation tests and trials during the production support phase or as part of a research project.
  • Actively participating in the development of your field of expertise and promoting findings within potential projects.
  • Supporting design reviews and delivering high-quality engineering work within agreed timelines, quality standards, and budget constraints.
  • Ensuring full compliance with all applicable requirements and specifications.
  • Contributing to the continuous evaluation and improvement of processes, tools, and the development, transfer, and retention of knowledge within the department.

Skills & experience
We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

Bachelor degree in a technical field, coupled with at least one year of relevant experience.

  • Expertise in one or more specialized technical subjects such as system design, vulnerability reduction concepts, or signature reduction concepts for naval vessels and/or offshore installations.
  • Experience in vulnerability reduction and system design and in complex project environments is an advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, with experience collaborating with research institutes, universities, engineers, and project and tender managers in naval shipbuilding or a related industry.
  • Good command of the Dutch and English language both written and verbal.
  • Excellent references, as a security screening is part of the hiring process.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with EU (work) visa or with both an EU and non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.
