Overview

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will lead initiatives and support operations surrounding Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, On-Premises Exchange environments, Proofpoint Email Security, and Microsoft Security & Compliance solutions. Your role involves resolving escalated issues, implementing robust infrastructure solutions, and mentoring junior staff. You will also take ownership of engineering tasks associated with identity and messaging platforms while ensuring security, compliance, and performance excellence.

Responsibilities

Microsoft 365 & Exchange Administration:

  • Architect, implement, and maintain complex hybrid Exchange environments (Exchange Online and On Prem).
  • Manage user identity lifecycle across Microsoft 365 and Exchange systems, including mailbox migrations, security groups, transport rules, and email routing.
  • Lead support and maintenance activities for Microsoft 365 applications including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online. Monitor and optimize mail flow and troubleshooting issues using Microsoft Defender, message trace, and service health dashboards.

 

Proofpoint and Email Security:

  • Administer and configure Proofpoint Email Protection services including spam filtering, encryption, data loss prevention (DLP), and threat intelligence.
  • Respond to security alerts and take proactive measures to harden the email ecosystem.
  • Partner with InfoSec teams to develop policies that meet compliance and security requirements.

Security & Compliance (M365 Defender & Purview):

  • Design and enforce compliance policies using Microsoft Purview (Information Protection, DLP, Compliance Manager).
  • Support implementation of Conditional Access, MFA, and Defender for Office 365.
  • Conduct regular audits, eDiscovery, and insider risk management activities.
  • Stay up to date on evolving compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOX, GDPR) and their application in Microsoft
  • cloud environments.

General Infrastructure Responsibilities:

  • Serve as SME for M365 and messaging systems architecture.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on hybrid infrastructure deployments.
  • Document systems, configurations, and changes for operational transparency.
  • Assist with broader infrastructure tasks including Active Directory, DNS, and network security as needed.
  • Complete all responsibilities as outlined in the annual performance review and/or goal setting. 
  • Complete all special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in MIS, Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of IT infrastructure experience including 5+ years hands-on with M365, Exchange (Online & On-Prem), and email security platforms.
  • 3+ years of Proofpoint administration.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft 365 security tools including Purview, Defender, Azure AD.
  • Strong experience with hybrid identity, SSO, certificate management, and PowerShell scripting.

 

Skills & Capabilities:

 

  • Deep understanding of TCP/IP stack, DNS, and firewall interactions with email systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting mail flow, email security, and compliance issues.
  • Familiarity with ITIL, change management, and service desk escalation procedures.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities; able to guide team through complex technical issues.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-departmental collaboration.

 

Nice to Have:

 

  • Microsoft certifications (MS-101, MS-500, SC-400) or equivalent.
  • Experience with other security and observability tools.
  • Familiarity with audit protocols and regulatory compliance operations in healthcare or finance sectors.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Must be able to provide a dedicated, secure work area.
  • Must be able to provide high-speed internet access / connectivity and office setup and maintenance.
  • No adverse environmental conditions expected

 

 

Base compensation ranges from $115,000 to $125,000 per year. Specific offers are determined by various factors, such as experience, education, skills, certifications, and other business needs.

 

This role is eligible for discretionary bonus consideration
